Helmholtz Watson

I chose this photo of a broken plate for Helmholtz because of how, I feel like Helmholtz is liked, respected, and comfortable with his class and the other members of it for that matter, but he doesn't like or fully fit into the world state as a whole, despite the respect he gets. I think he, so far, seems to not really feel like he fits in, but fit in more than Bernard does. This plate represents that because of how, despite the crack representing how he doesn't like the world state, he fits otherwise

Quotes that show this include...
1) ""Did you ever feel," he asked, "as though you had something inside you that was only waiting for that you aren't using--- you know, like all the water that goes down the falls instead of through the turbines?""(69)
- Despite fitting into society, sometimes he has feelings that he isn't a perfect fit, but fits most of the time. He doesn't say anything because he doesn't feel that he has the power to, but he has the feeling.
2) "I'm pretty good at inventing phrases---you now, the sort of words that suddenly make you jump, almost as though you'd sat on a pin, they seem so new and exciting even though they're about something hypnopaedically obvious."
- He is not exactly like everyone else as he has more creative thoughts than they seem to.

For Bernard, I chose a photo that I felt was the opposite of Lenina's in a way, because of how, unlike her, he feels like he doesn't fit in in society. Bernard feels trapped and not suited to his society, and overall feels like he is different than everyone around him. This photo represents this for me because of how the broken tile, who I think could show Bernard's thoughts and existence, is surrounded and unable to get away from the uniformity around it, even though it doesn't fit properly with everything else, which is how Bernard feels.

Quotations that show this include...
1) "In the lift, on their way up to the changing rooms, Henry
Foster and the Assistant Director of Predestination rather
pointedly turned their backs on Bernard Marx from the Psychology Bureau: averted themselves from that unsavoury reputation." (35)
- He is unliked, doesn't fit in, and has a bad reputation in society.
2)"“But his reputation?”
“What do I care about his reputation?”
“They say he doesn’t like Obstacle Golf.”
“They say, they say,” mocked Lenina.
“And then he spends most of his time by himself–alone.”" (37)
- He has an awful reputation and is very different than people are supposed to be

For Lenina, I chose this picture of flowers because of how she sees herself as a good citizen of the society she is so used to, and is not overly bothered by how alike everyone is. She is a normal girl, like everyone else, who just happens to be the center of the story and is not overly unique. I liked how this photo was of pretty flowers that are also ordinary, which is how Lenina is.

Quotations that show this include...
1) “Oh, she’s a splendid girl. Wonderfully pneumatic. I’m surprised you haven’t had her.” (47)
- She is very similar to the others of her society, and well liked by all of them
2) "“And to tell the truth,” said Lenina, “I’m beginning to get
just a tiny bit bored with nothing but Henry every day.” She
pulled on her left stocking. “Do you know Bernard Marx?”
she asked in a tone whose excessive casualness was evidently forced" (48)
- She is very typical and does not express annoyance about her society
