Facts about the Education in Finland

The first finnish Kindergarten (päiväkoti) was built in 1888 in Helsinki, Finland. A special law called "Laki lasten päivähoidosta" (1973) says that the care of children in kindergarten or special care groups want to support the parents. Every child has to get the opportunity to visit a kindergarten and to grow up with a special education. It is important to mention that children in Finland do not go to school until they are seven years old. It means the children have enough time to enjoy their childhood, to spend time with their family and friends and grow up individual. In finnish schools there are a total of 190 school days in a school year. The School year starts in the middle of August and ends in May. Finish kids have about 10 weeks of summer holiday as well as holidays in autumn, Christmas break and winter usually in February.
For the nine- year basic education in Finland the tuition, school books, learning materials equipment are all provided free for the children. All children, regardless of capability, are taught in one classroom. Out of this reason the children can help each other and can learn from each other. The week time is no more than from 20 to 25 hours. It means that the children spend no more than f hours a day at school because they need the time to grow up and to create their free time. It is very important that the children grow up happily without stress. Out of this reason the children never get too much of homework. The division of homework depends on how fast the kid is in doing his or her homework. In finnish schools there are great school meals for everyone. Every child has the opportunity to get a healthy meal for free and get enough time to enjoy it. Another aspect is that there are no private school in Finland by reason of discrimination is evil and not acceptable in Finland. The Teachers teach the children what they want to learn not what they have to learn. It is an important aspect to do not stress the children and to integrate the children into the school day.

Reasons to love Finland

Reason 1 - The one and only Santa clause is living in Finland. He comes originally from Korvatunturi. Now times the man in red now resides lives in Rovaniemi, Lapland, where he greets visitors all year round.

Reason 2 - Finland is one of the few countries in the world where lost wallets and mobile phones get returned to their owner. People feel safe walking alone in city parks or using public traffic – no matter what time it is.

Reason 3 - Another reason to love Finland is the coffee there. Almost all people love drinking coffee and they consume more coffee per person than does any other nation in the world! There such amazing coffee shops and cafés around the country.

Reason 4 - Did you know that play games like “Angry birds” or “Clash of Clans” are finsh inventions? Finland has produced more successful games for mobile phones than any other country in the world.

Reason 5 - And a special reason to love Finland is that Finland is the perfect place to be a mother – or a child. All mothers get to stay at home with their baby for almost a year with full income or excellent benefits. When a parent with a child in a buggy uses public transport they travel free of charge in most cities. When a baby is born the finnish government sends a big baby box full of supplies to the new born baby like clothes, nappies and toys. In this way no child is left behind in Finland. When the children grow up the luck in their life continues. Finland has held first place in OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) for several years, ranking our education system as one of the world’s best. This means that the finish school is a good place for a child and that they are happy.

Sauna is such a big part of finnish culture, it can’t be compared to anything else. For Finns, it’s a must at regular intervals, and if they go too long without it, they’ll start feeling incomplete. For centuries, it has been a place for physical and spiritual cleansing, for getting bare in all senses of the word and entering the core of humanity. Sauna is a way of life in Finland. Men and women go separately in public saunas. This is usually the custom everywhere, but mixed groups are also an option if everyone feels comfortable with it. Families usually bathe together.

Moreover it is really interesing somthing to learn about the education System.
I find it exciting that the North lights Shine 200 nights a year and are called Aurora Borealis. Saunaing is also a big part of their culture and i think it´s great to relax after a working day! I have learned that People in Finland are very honest and feel very safe. In Addition, mothers in their parents get their full salary! you also get a big baby box with a lot of differenence things for the Baby. All of that have i learned after i read this blog.
I think it´s good that the children don´t have to go to school until they´re seven years old and are only allowed to be a children. They also have ten weeks vacation and not six weeks like in Germany! They can really relax! Additional they have autumm and Christmas Holidays. Moreover they don´t have to pay for their School supplies - that would help some families in Germany a lot! I find it really good that the children are not put under pressure and have enough free time. Not for the sake of it is Finland the happiest Country!!
I could imagine working in Finland very well, because nobody is put under pressure, the Children are taken into consideration und there are supported in their development. Futhermore you get very good financial support!

In advance, I did not know that Finland is such a beautiful country. The pictures on your blog are beautiful, especially the northern lights, because they look really magical. Through your blog I have learned that in Finland you can ski very well and there are many areas. I also did not know that saunas belong to the Finnish culture. I also learned that the games Angry Bird and Cash of Clans come from Finland and people love coffee there, like me. Very interesting, I found the benefits of being a mother in Finland. The school system in Finland I find very good, especially the emphasis is placed on the children have no stress and still have enough free time. I have nothing to add to your blog. I could well imagine visiting Finland to see the beautiful northern lights. I would also like to see a kindergarten there and compare it with the kindergarten in Germany. :-). best regards Konstantina

Kim has written a very infomative blog about Finnland so I feel well prepared for a trip. I have learned something about the finish lifytsyle, habits, food and about its nature. Very impressive was the description of the Northern Lights. It raised my attention and I really would like to see this country and its beautiful landscape. Especially for children it could be an adventure to visit the hometown of Santa Claus. It was also interesting to read that Finnland has one of the best education systems worlwide and that the role of a mother and child is very special. It‘s nice to hear that there is still a country which offers children the possibility to enjoy their childhood as long as possible. I think the finish people are very social und friendly because they give so much to the people and children. I really would like to see more from Finnland, sleep in a glass igloo and I also want to try to ride a reindeer sleigh. ;-)

Lara
