The Amazon River is located in South America. It starts in Mismi, Peru and travels through Guyana, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil and Columbia. The mouth of the Amazon is the Atlantic Ocean and its tributaries are the Rio Negro, Jurua River and Madeira River. The delta of the Amazon River is found at the mouth and the area of the Amazon basin is 2.7 million square miles. The Amazon River is 6400 kilometers long (4000 miles), 100 meters deep (300 feet), 1 kilometer in the dry season and 30 km in the wet. The Amazon is significant because of the animals that live in or around it, and the water it provides for the villages and rainforests nearby. Over 5,600 known species of fish live in the Amazon River and 4 different species of anacondas can be found near the shallow waters.

Mining is a major environmental issue that affects the Amazon River in many different ways. Mining has done many things to the Amazon River. By laying explosives in the Amazon they kill off organisms in the water such as fish which makes it hard for fising companies near the Amazon. Mining also pollute the water itself. This not only affects the animals around or in the Amazon, but the Amazon people who use it as a water source. As well as pollution and fishing mining changes the way the river looks. The explosives dislodge major rock, sand and dirt particles that change the shape of the river. People mine in the Amazon to obtain minerals such as Gold, tin, mercury etc. To prevent this, letters have been written to powerful figures in the country and organisations like Greenpeace are campaigning against. People also protest. Many environmental issues have affected the Amazon River such as mining.

The Amazon River is socially significant because it is home to the people that live around it. Social Value is the relationship between people and their surroundings or environment. People have been living along the Amazon River since the sixteenth century. The first settlers around the Amazon River were Indians. They would use the river as a source of food, as they would farm around it and fish in it. They would eat whatever the river provided them even crocodiles. Soon European settlers came and began to control the Indians. They finished their food provisions and took over their boats. Many Indians were taken into slavery or they would catch the diseases the Europeans brought with them like Influenza or measles. Over time the population of the Indian people dropped. In the early 1990s the population was over 600,000 people but by the early 21st century it was 200,000, now the population of the Indian people around the Amazon is 280,000. The Amazon River was and still is socially significant because it is home to the many people that live around it.
