Grunge was a fashion choice and musical style in the 90's. The music often contained loud guitars and angsty lyrics, and the fashion consisted of flannel, boots, and dark colors. This image is from Vogue Magazine and showcases the very unique style choices of that era. This is one of the top fads of the time because it was a very popular style that lots of people followed.

Beanie Babies

This picture shows a collection of Beanie Babies plushies. Beanie Babies are small, cheap plush toys . The only difference about them is how they were filled with small beans instead of the regular cotton. They became such a huge fad in the 90s when the manufacturer stopped making certain designs, causing collectors to go crazy and buy as many as they could, hoping their value would increase once they had sold out. This is one of the top fads from the 90's because it had people all over the US trying to buy them, but eventually burnt out and became worthless.

Hypercolor T-shirts

Hypercolor shirts were created in the late 80s but weren't able to truly catch on until the 90s. The shirts were all dipped in a temperature-sensitive pigment, causing them to temporarily turn colorless when exposed to heat. For example, the kid in the image touched his shirt, and you can see an exact hand mark on him, but in a different color. This was one of the top fads from the 90's because lots of people purchased and wore these shirts, but just like any other fad, it eventually died out when the excessive heat began to ruin the shirts' dyes. This meant that after one wash in hot water, the shirt was already ruined, which led to the company filing for bankruptcy in 1992.

Olympics 1992

The 1992 Olympic Games had multiple stars from the US. Sally Gunnel got gold in the Women's 400-meter hurdles, Linford Christie won the Men's 100-meters, and two rowers Matthey Pinsent and Steve Redgrave came first in the Men's coxless pair. What makes it so special is how these were the first gold metals for all of these athletes, making this a time to remember. This image shows just how crowded the arena was to watch this event.

The Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan Scandal

This sandal shook the world, and there was even a movie created purely about what occurred. Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan (the two women in the image) were the US' big hopes leading up to the 1994 Winter Olympics, and they both had polar opposite public images. Their rivalry wasn't anything ordinary, because Harding's ex-husband and her bodyguard hired someone to attack Kerrigan, hoping she would be too injured to compete in the Olympics. Funny enough, this didn't work out for Harding in the slightest, where she finished 8th place and Kerrigan managed to take home sliver.

Tiger Woods Making History in 1997

Tiger Woods, the golfer in the picture above, was already somewhat known by 1997, but this record-breaking Masters win was what finally put him in front of the whole world. Woods won by a landslide against all of his opponents, but it wasn't just an average big win; it was one of the greatest golf victories of all time. Woods won while being 12 strokes ahead of his rivals. The only ever time someone had won by over this much was in 1862, when Old Tom Morris was 13 strokes ahead. After this, Tiger Woods stayed on the top for almost seven years.

First Web Browser

One of the biggest things that changed technology was web browsers. The first one ever created was called the WorldWideWeb, and allowed the internet to be accessed from a huge range of places and devices. The format is nothing like what we have today, as shown in the image above, but led to the creation of many more browsers, such as Google or FireFox. The internet truly changed forever, and the one to thank for that was the WorldWideWeb.

Sony Playstation

Just like most old technology, the first ever Playstation looks very different to the current PS5 we have today. Sony took the world by storm when they released this consol, due to it being a part of a new generation of 32-bit consoles, and also the fact that it used discs instead of the usual cartridges previous gaming consoles were using. This was a big deal for the technology of the 90's because it caused other gaming consoles to eventually switch to the use of discs after seeing the worlds reaction to them.

Amazon in 1995 was a completely different website. They were primarily an online book shop, but within a month, they managed to ship books to every state in the US and 45 other countries around the world. Their plan was to get big fast, so that's exactly what they did. Eventually, they expanded from just selling books, and became the biggest shopping site in the world. As of 2022, they were worth 1.4 trillion dollars, and have given jobs to over 1.2 million people across the world.

The Phantom Menace

The first prequel in the Star Wars trilogy came out in 1999. It introduced Sith Lord Darth Maul and young Anakin Skywalker. It featured groundbreaking CGI and the famous "Duel of the Fates" lightsaber battle between Darth Maul, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Qui-gon Jin. Even though some Star Wars fans criticize the movie, The Phantom Menace became a box office hit and it still a popular movie to this day.

Jurassic Park

Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park is about dinosaurs coming back to life in a park which opens to the public. This movie changed movies forever because of its realistic CGI effects. Scenes like the T-Rex attacks were both scary and exciting which is why viewers love this movie so much. The movie brought back the popularity of dinosaur's again and lead to a long series of hit movies.

The Titanic is a famous love story about a man and woman from two different worlds on the sinking ship. This movie is based of the story of the Titanic that sunk after hitting a glacier and many people died. This movie stared the young movie star Leonardo DiCaprio who helped this movie become one of the most successful movies of all time. This movie won many awards and is one of the best movies ever created.

Nevermind Nirvana

This album changed rock music forever with its aggressive, angry style of music. The hit song "Smells Like Teen Spirt" became a popular music for young people all over and is still a hit to this day. The album is a landmark in music history because it was what shot the popularity of grunge and alternative rock. It reached number one on the US billboard 200 and sold over 30 million copies worldwide. Nevermind is highly considered one of the greatest albums of all time.

It won Album of the year in 1999 and has helped pave the way and insprie other young female rappers.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only international organization that deals with trade between nations. This picture shows the building where the organization mainly is. The WTO was a very important event in the 90's because it set the rules of trade for nations and allowed it to flow smoothly and freely. This led to improving living standards, creating more and better job opportunities for people, and promoting sustainable development. This also led to global economical growth. In fact, the value of all imports and exports made up around half of the global GDP. (Page 1277)

The Collapse of the Soviet Union

The Collapse of the Soviet Union occurred in 1991 after years of economic struggles and Cold war tensions with the United States. Mikhail Gorbachev leader of the Soviet Union used the reforms Glasnost and Perestroika which were created to give the USSR openness and economic restructuring, but instead they weakened communist control instead of helping the USSR. As government control weakened Soviet republics, including Lithuanian and Ukraine, demanded independence from the Soviet Union. An unsuccessful overthrow by communist officials in August 1991 made the USSR collapse process speed up. By December of 1991 all of the 15 Soviet republics had declared independence, ending the Cold War and creating new nations like Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.

Southeast Nations Gain Independence

After decades of foreign rule and conflict, Southeast Asia's former colonies eventually gained their independence in the 1990s. After 24 years of harsh occupation, East Timor gained independence from Indonesia in 1999 following a UN vote, although hundreds were killed in the violent uprising originally. By closing American military installations in 1992, the Philippines declared its independence and put an end to over a century of American military involvement. Aung San Suu Kyi was imprisoned and dreams for democracy ended when Myanmar's military system rejected her huge victory in the 1990 election. Meanwhile, Singapore and Malaysia rose as economic superpowers, showing that former colonies can thrive after they gained their freedom. Southeast Asia was affected by these events, which combined new nation-building difficulties with independence battles.
