Tomas introduced campus journalism in the Philippines in 1890 with the publication of El Liliputiense. This is based on Alixander Haban Escote's brief history of campus journalism published in History in 2008.

Some argue that the history of campus journalism actually began at the University of the Philippines, not at Sto Tomas. In particular, in 1910, when they published the College Follio (which is now known as The Philippine Collegian). In Ang Pamahayagan (1985), Oscar Manalo, Narciso Matienzo, and Virgilio Monteloyola claimed this argument.
