The reading skill is carried out by using extracts from authentic academic textbooks. It usually starts with a short task to get you thinking about the topic, or to predict the content of the text. Further tasks will help you to identify important features of the text, such as the main ideas or specific language, and demonstrate how you can read and understand an academic text even if you don ’t understand every word. This module often end with a task where you respond critically to what you have read, encouraging students to think critically.

This skill focuses on some of the most important aspects of academic writing in the first four units, such as writing sentences, descriptions and simple paragraphs. Later in the book you move on to analyse paragraph structure, learn how to write summaries and citations, and introductions and conclusions to essays. In the last four units, you will look at different types of essay (e.g. argument, problem -solution, cause and effect), looking at key aspects of organization, style, and use of language. You will also be helped to check and evaluate your writing.

This skill focuses on the understanding of different audiovisual texts in the academic context. In order to do so, certain pre-listening activities are carried out, which help anticipate the content of the presentation that students will eventually be exposed to, and the vocabulary as well. Each “genre” – presentations, perspectives, lectures, debates, etc. – consists of specific vocabulary or expressions, which are also covered in these activities. Moreover, there are after-listening activities that aim to discuss the topics approached in the text; these may include speaking, which is the complementary skill to listening. The textbook prioritizes comprehension; that is why it asks students to identify main ideas or words to get the gist of the audiovisual text.

Being closely related to listening, speaking aims to reproduce the texts which had been listened to or to produce an answer to them. For instance, evaluating a presentation and producing a new one of one’s own, with a guideline provided by the textbook. Another typical task is to listen to a perspective and give your point of view indicating agreement or disagreement. Obviously, there are before and after-speaking activities which help students get used to the vocabulary that they should imply in these academic discussions.
