         <description><![CDATA[<div>"The cook's head was on a thwart, and he looked without interest at the water under his nose. He was deep in other scenes. Finally he spoke. 'Billie,' he murmured, dreamfully, 'what kind of pie do you like best?'"(Crane 28).<br><br><em>The </em><strong><em>Cook </em></strong><em>is the one that distracts the people on the boat from the negative in the situation. He lightens the mood by asking about different foods and normalcy. He is the hopeful one.</em></div>]]></description>

There is a type of </em><strong><em>brotherhood </em></strong><em>in this because they do not want to leave one family clueless to what had happened to their child.</em></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"The birds sat comfortably in groups, and they were envied by some in the dingey ... Often they came very close and stared at the men with black bead-like eyes. At these times they were uncanny and sinister in their unblinking scrutiny, and the men hooted angrily at them, telling them to be gone" (Crane 7).<br><br><em>The men see the birds as evil which foreshadows a bad event that is soon to come. The gulls also contribute to </em><strong><em>nature </em></strong><em>and that they do not act in a certain way even when they are in trouble.</em></div>]]></description>

On the northern horizon a new light appeared, a small bluish gleam on the edge of the waters. these two lights were the furniture of the world. Otherwise there was nothing but waves" (Crane 29).<br><br><strong>nature</strong><br><em>This is a description of the ocean. The men recognize the beauty that comes from the ocean despite the misery and torrture that it brought them.</em></div>]]></description>

And he rowed yet afterwards" (Crane 30).<br><br><em>The </em><strong><em>oiler </em></strong><em>represents reality because he is the one who has been the essential person that has been rowing even when he was on the verge of sleeping. He is the healthiest out of all of them and he faces reality and realizes that there is no chance of being rescued.<br></em><br></div>]]></description>

The men are trying to take shelter, but nature is unpredictable and mysterious and can change at any point, yet nature is beautiful because of the way that the colors in the sky can change.</em></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"They were a captain, an oiler, a cook, and a correspondent, and they were all friends, friends in a more curiously iron-bound degree than may be common" (Crane 11).<br><br><br><em>All of the men have a great </em><strong><em>bond </em></strong><em>that nobody can explain. Their bond is like iron which is strong and had to break. They have a brotherhood that cannot be broken because of how close they have gotten, literally and figuratively.</em></div>]]></description>

He is a father figure because he put himself behind the correspondent.</em></div>]]></description>
