As a child, she was often sick. At four, she caught polio, a disease that attacks the brain and spine. This could paralyze Wilma. The disease caused damage in her left leg, and rumors came around whispering: "she won't walk again." Because of this, she didn't start school until second grade. She attended two all-black public schools. She also became a great basketball player, and had an average of 32 points per game.

She wore a metal brace for a long time, and her sisters had to rub her left leg to get blood flowing. Finally, they took her to a city hospital, where she learned to exercise her leg. The bus ride there was very important for Wilma.

Good news! When Wilma was nine years, she shocked her doctors, parents, and almost every adult in her life by walking without her brace! She wore special support shoes until the age of eleven, by then, she was completely healed!

She was challenging people to races only a year after the amazing recovery. By that time, her speed on the court made many people surprised. This caught the eye of Mr. Ed Temple. This man was a track coach, and worked at the University. Wilma was invited to play on the track with her new team, the Tigerbelles. She became a cunning runner.

Legacy: Wilma Rudolph would sit on this particular bus ride, and she would see the harshness of segregation. Segregation laws made "colored" people separated from the "whites," witch people claimed were far more superior.

Legacy: She helped others believe that people with disabilities could be educated, because most people in Helen's time believed that "the disabled should be put away in asylums." But Helen Keller proved otherwise.
