The Decision to Have a Cornea Transplant

The first health-related decision is when my dad had to make the decision to get a cornea transplant this past summer. If he if he did not get it then he would progressively lose his eyesight over time due to an eye disease he has. If he did do the surgery he could either regain good eyesight again, nothing would change, or something could happen to his eyes during his surgery that could make him lose his eyesight for good.

The second health-related decision is when my dad had to decide if he wanted to lose weight and exercise more and eat healthier. He was 40 years old and was in shape, and even had run five marathons, but still could lose some weight. If he did decide to lose weight he could become a healthier and better person. If he decided not to become healthier, he would risk diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and more down the road.

Deciding to Get the Transplant

My dad ended up deciding to get the transplant for his cornea, and believed it was the best and most effective decision for him. He decided to take the risk and his eyes have gotten slightly better. The textbook says, "After a decision has been made and implemented it is important to assess both the outcome of the decision and the process by which the decision was reached" (Page 10). My dad was satisfied with the outcome of his decision after he assessed the outcome and the process of the decision.

My dad decided losing weight would definitely be the better decision. He started to eat better and ended up doing a workout program daily. The textbook says, "Many of the lessons developed in this stage come out of examining the implications of the decision" (Page 10). Before my dad made the decisions he looked at all of the implications and conclusions that could happen from the decision.

The Decision Making Processes

After my dad's decisions were made, he emphasized the favorable results more than the negative. The textbook says, "When decision outcomes are not clearly measurable or have ambiguous results- some parts good, some bad- is not uncommon for people to emphasize the favorable results and discount the negative" (Page 11). Although my dad does not know if the transplant fully worked or if his eyesight will even get any more better, he still emphasizes that his eyes have gotten slightly better and can see a little better. After my dad decided to work out and get healthier he reflected back on time trying to figure what he can do better on any decisions he can make in the future. The textbook says, "It can also be valuable for decision makers to step back and examine or appraise the process by which a decision was made. Often they can learn lessons that will benefit them in the future" (Page 11). After my dad made the decision, he looked back on the process and figured out what he could have improved on and what steps he could have eliminated. In both decisions he questioned whether he had all of the information and knowledge he need in order to make each decision. If he did not have enough he would ask people for their advice.
