Life Skills & Mentoring - This is a field trip we do with our home room classes every year with the lesson focused on life skills (and some mentoring). Teachers plan this together but we hire experts to teach them the life skills. For two whole days they are outdoors, learning life skills (i.e. read a compass for directions, knife skills, cook, build a fire, clean up, team work). Once they learn these skills they have to go on a scavenger hunt to perform all these skills. After each day, each teacher spends time with their mentoring group to have a time of reflection. This time is a chance for students to express how they feel about the activities, what were challenging to them, and how team work went. They learn about the history of the foods, taste them, and then cook the foods itself in the cooking lab. I learned to prioritize my responsibilities and to be cognizant of spending my time wisely. A secondary challenge was all the tech issues I had.
