1. How did the students react to your teaching, to the activities and the materials? How did they react to the lesson?

I knew from the very beginning that teaching English to this group was going to be a real challenge. The children were quite reluctant to meet a new English teacher and after my observations and ayudantias I realised that they had not been exposed to oral English at all since the classes were delivered completely in Spanish. During our first class, they highligted the idea that I should speak in Spanish otherwise they would not be able to understand anything. I made my best to prove them that they were wrong. I spoke English most of the time and, when it was necesary, I used the sandwich technique. We played games ( "what's missing" and "rock, paper, scissors")in which everyone took part and we all spent a very good time. After finishing this class and heading home, I knew that my teaching, activities and materials had engaged the students so, I had succeed.

What aspects of the lesson do you consider successful?

I was pretty sure that a group activity would be quite fun and enriching for my class and I was right. I divided the class in groups of 5 students and gave each a "hairband" to play the game "Who am I" and work with professions. It was amazing observing how engaged and motivated they were. They respected the turns and paid extraordinary attention when a partner was producing or answering a question.
I am also aware of the importance of the routine of every single class, for that reason I established one for my students: as soon as I get into the class, I greet them, and I ask them about the date and the weather. Once the answer is given, I write it on the board. I consider that this kind of order makes them feel safe about what comes next.

What teaching strategies did you use? Which ones were effective? Why / why not?

During this class, students were invited to work in groups and investigate a little bit about wild animals. To do so, I divided the class into groups of 3 or 4 children who were given flashcards with information and an image related to a particular animal. Once the group investigation was completed, each group shared what they had learned about that animal in front of the class. I consider this activity enriching since it covers the three main cognitive learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. However, I have to say that this task was particularly challenging for those students who are shy or feel reluctant to stand in front of the class. I encouraged them to do their best and they showed confidence.

What aspects of the lesson require change / improvement?

I highly believe that lots of my lessons require improvements or changes. Some of the improvements were suggested by the teacher (Aurelia) in the lesson corrections and I used them (and will use them as well) in future classes. I regard myself as a flexible person who learns from the mistakes and tries to offer better oral, written and reading activities, games, individual and collaborative tasks, etc. for my students.

I am pretty sure that during my classes I could have spoken more English and foster the interaction between students. However, I am satisfied with my teaching and the way my students reacted to my classes:

“Teacher Ana, ¿cómo se dice hermosa en ingles?”

“Beautiful!”

“The class is beautiful!” (Liz after having finished the class).

For that reason, as soon as I finished that class, I could not help that different ideas, plans, tasks, games, etc spun in my head for hours.

I knew that the "warms up" needed to be active, quick and easy. For that reason I chose a soft ball as a trigger to let them speak in a relaxed way. I knew that the "warms up" needed to be active, quick and easy. For that reason I chose a soft ball as a trigger to let them speak in a relaxed way.

Fortunately, it worked pretty well since all the students wanted to catch the ball and produce their oral part. I noticed that when my students have their hands busy with something ( a ball in this case) their oral productions are better.
The recycled material is vital to foster learning, for that reason I plan to keep using the big and colourful flashcards for some classes more.

Describe it and say why it was important.

Children love games and, if it involves movement, better. For that reason, for this class I thought it would be a good idea to introduce the topic clothes using a big felt doll called Alex. I placed it on the board and, using a counting game (Blue shoes, black shoes, Ana is wearing red shoes!) I picked two students who stood up and came to the board. Once there, they rolled a dice and depending on the weather on the dice, they had to get Alex dressed with the different clothing items placed on my desk. All the children played the game and they spent a wonderful time doing it.

I must keep them busy and interested in what they are doing. I need to motivate them through the activities provided.
