The children discover objects such as tin cans and oil which are polluting the water. After seeing this pollution, the story goes on to discuss how our forests are burning down and people are polluting our sea and land. The story ends by saying-
                                               ”They all lived on one world.
                               And that world too, they held in their hands” (Foreman,2020.)

The story aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set by the United Nations. 
SDG 13: Climate action can be seen in the story as the characters make efforts to protect the environment and make positive impacts to the planet. The story emphasises the importance of taking action to combat climate change, promote sustainability and preserve nature for future generations. 

SDG 14 focuses on life below water. In the story this can be reflected as the characters aims to make an effort to protect marine life and oceans by removing the toxins from the water. The story highlights the importance of preserving underwater ecosystems, combating ocean pollution and promoting sustainable practises to ensure the well being of marine environments. 

SDG 15:  The story showcases the importance of life on land. The story discusses how “forests are disappearing into clouds of smoke and people in towns poisoning the land of seas. A world where creatures even in far off snows and the deepest oceans were not safe” (Foreman,2020). The characters in the book are depicted to take actions to protect and preserve wildlife habitats and biodiversity.

The “sea” is rice dyed blue and the “sand” is brown sugar. There is also moss in the tray to act as seaweed. Children can explore the various textures within this tray.

The tray also includes toxins which we see polluting our beaches daily. In this activity it is up to children to decide what belongs and what doesn’t belong on our beaches and within our seas and put it into the bins. Using glue the design can be drawn out. This can include any object in the sea. When the glue is applied the salt is then sprinkled over the glue. Then using your water paints, drop the droplets from the brush onto the salt. 

This activity provides an opportunity for children to become creative and mix colours. Children can discover the reaction between the paints and the salt and watch it as it spreads across their design. This teaches children to recycle objects to create art. The items used to create this were left over paper plates and crepe paper which was once in a gift bag.  The tentacles can be made from other objects such as wool and string. 

To create this activity the child can draw out a jelly fish. After cutting the jelly fish out the child uses finger paints to paint the jelly fish.
Finger painting is great for children because it allows them to explore and create using their hands, which helps in developing their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. This can also provide a sensory experience that engages multiple senses and encourages creativity and self-expression. 
The child then can cut out the tentacles using the material which they have provided to them and glue them onto the plate.

We were provided with open ended material which allowed us to create an activity based on the book ‘Swimmy’. This activity linked in with my book ‘One World’ as it was also linked to sustainable development goal 14. To create this activity we used wallpaper, glue, spray paint, crayons and recycled cardboard.

The use of open ended materials provides an unstructured experiment for children to engage in. Open ended materials can be manipulated and used by children to create anything to link with under the sea theme. As my last activity I have decided to steer away from the “under the sea” theme and focus on life on land. This activity links in with sustainable development goal 13 and 15. The activity is planting plants with children to create a small garden. Planting plants is beneficial for children as it helps them learn about the natural world, develop a sense of responsibility, and understand the importance of caring for the environment. It also provides them with a hands-on experience that fosters their curiosity, creativity, and connection to nature.
