Food contribute

Food contribute to the community wellness by feeding the whole community. Gathering with the community is so kind because we all are sharing what is contribute. We start sharing our food with the community during special occasions. We know that the community will eat what was given to the community. Seeing others eat during special occasions is so wonderful to see because we all struggle sometime. We share are country food with the community, esp when we first catch our first animal, once we catch our first animal (caribou) we post on social media to give out the meat.

-Holly Kayuryuk

We have a lunch program in our community that provides healthy nutritious meals and eat at their building, that brings a community together and have social interactions. It could even be within a food bank- that provides vouchers for the community to get meals for their health and wellness.

Hattie Aningaat

Food contributes to community wellness by fostering social connections, makes one have a sense of belonging, strengthens cultural identity via traditional foods, and promotes mental well-being by offering comfort and routine. On January 4, I held a turkey dinner to celebrate my son’s early birthday party. Both sides of our family were invited to come eat at our apartment and that made everyone so happy to be spend time together. My son was the happiest to have all his family members over to celebrate for his early birthday party (his birthday is January 5, but we were returning back to school/work on that day). After his party, I had a bit of help cleaning up, and team work is important because we learn to work with each other, be there for one another and it helps get the job done faster.

-Lisa

How does food contribute to community wellness?

Giving out country food to elders or someone who doesn’t have transportation to go hunting is really important especially to an elder's because knowing them they survived back in the days for country food it was only their food daily. It is really sad to see them when they want food such as country food, we have coda for belugas and caribou’s. I thank the HTO for having community feast at least twice a year and give out food for elders.

- Annie
