I think this book is a really good device to use to show students that it's important to love yourself, be confident in yourself, and rise above what others say about you. Chrysanthemum loves herself and everything that makes her different, which is something that students can sometimes struggle with. There is also a bit of a karmatic element to it, which shows students that what goes around comes back around, and being mean to others isn't good for anyone.
Chrysanthemum is a great way to open up a discussion with students about bullying, embracing your differences, and self-love.

This book is a very fun and silly story. I think it's a great way to get students engaged with a book, as well as a really good tool to introduce inferencing. As the book goes on, it becomes clear that the monkeys are copying the peddler. This can be utilized to get students to guess what they think might happen next. Most younger children will be able to find this story engaging and intriguing.

Amos consistently checks on and cares for the animals at the zoo, and when he needs it, the animals do the same for him. He specifically takes the time to do with the animals what each of them likes to do, which is such a vivid depiction of a good friend. Overall it's a very sweet book that I think many children will enjoy and learn from.

Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, while kind of silly in plot, is a heartstring-tugging, heartwarming journey. After a while, Sylvester begins to accept the thought that he'll be a rock forever, and his parents try to accept the fact that they won't find their son. This can open up a conversation with students about loss or dealing with hard things in life. When Sylvester is eventually turned back into himself, he and his parents decide they don't need the magic pebble, for they have all they could need in each other. The ending of this book is very sweet, very happy, and it emphasizes the importance of familial love.

This book is a powerful depiction of how fear of differences can lead to dangerous things like violence and war. It's a tool to show a heavy topic/idea in a not-so-heavy way. Students can also make historical connections to this book.
Feathers and Fools holds a pretty blatant anti-war sentiment, which can be a controversial take for some. At the same time, there are smaller takeaways that relate more to everyday life. There was nothing that came from the fighting between the peacocks and swans, which shows students that violence doesn't really resolve problems. At the end of the book, a baby swan and a baby peacock hatch, and they embrace their similarities rather than despise their differences.

This series is a twist on the classic fairy tales everyone knows and loves. I think it's deserving of a children's audience because it's a revival of old stories that they might be tired of. It's fun to try and notice the stories and details you remember from the fairy tales as you read the book, as well as find the differences, discrepancies, and nuances. The narrator's voice is also appealing to kids as it is witty and makes the book feel like it's maybe slightly "inappropriate" or "dangerous" (even though it's perfectly appropriate for it's age-range). That can make reading much more exciting. It's similar to the narrators in The Series of Unfortunate Events or The Secret Series.

Humpty Dumpty loved to sit on the wall and watch birds, but after he fell off and hurt himself, he was too traumatized to continue the activity that used to bring him so much joy. I'm sure many students would be able to resonate with and see themselves in Humpty Dumpty. However, when he overcame his fears, he blossomed into his true self.

Eyes that Kiss in the Corners is a lyrical book about loving one's almond-shaped eyes. It's deserving of a child's audience because it helps Asian kids romanticize their eyes, and it shows the kids who don't that there's nothing ugly or wrong with it. It's giving a new perspective that we don't typically see in America, which is that there is beauty in non-Eurocentric features.
This book is a good tool to talk about self-love and appreciating our own features, as well as celebrating our differences.

This book has a lot of diverse topics: adoption, immigration, disability, settings in two different countries, etc.
When Kara is living in the orphanage, she is put in the section for disabled children because she has a birth defect. This part of the book includes interactions with kids with different types of disabilities, and it's a way to introduce these things to students or open up a discussion about them.
Because of the multiple times that Kara has to move and adjust to a new setting, this book could resonate with children who have just moved or have moved before or have been in a weird situation similar to Kara's. It could be an outlet of sorts for them.
Red Butterfly is also interesting because it is written in free verse, so it's maybe a format that children aren't used to. It could be a fun and exciting new experience!

Like Margaret, I grew up without any sort of religious affiliation. I didn't really think much of it until some of my classmates would ask me why I didn't go to church or why I didn't believe in God. I simply didn't have an answer for them. Reading this book helped me work through some of the confusion that had left me with.
While the book is a bit dated, I do think the discussions of sexual topics and puberty can be helpful to other young students going through the same things. These topics can be uncomfortable to talk about and navigate. To read about the thoughts of someone going through these things can give students the language necessary to talk, as well as help them feel like they're not alone.

In this book, neighbors that had previously never gotten along come together to find their respective pets. This process makes them put their differences aside, and they realize that there wasn't ever really a reason for them to be spiteful and avoiding. I think this book teaches a really valuable lesson about not judging a book by its cover.
The art/illustrations in this book are stunning. Diaz uses mixed media and a really unique painting style that I've not seen in any other picture book.
I will say that the way in which this book discusses the sensitive issue of social justice-based rioting leaves something to be desired. It's harsh and takes the riots at face value. However, that in and of itself can still open up a conversation with students on how language and perspective can change the meaning of things.

This short film is so heartwarming; it always brings a tear to my eye. It shows a side to black fathers that isn't typically depicted in the media. Black men are portrayed as deadbeats, which is a really harmful stereotype. To see this character put love and effort into spending quality time with his daughter through her hairdo.
It also touches on the hardships of having a parent in the hospital. When I was in high school, my mom got pancreatitis, and she was in the hospital for 10 weeks. It was really hard on me, and at times I felt so alone. I can only imagine how that would feel for a child, so I think a film like this can be a healthy outlet.

Dealing with a younger sibling, struggling with "behavioral issues", job loss, feelings of neglect, a new baby in the house, and so much more. I really loved these books growing up. To me, Ramona felt like a friend. I think it's a really good way for kids to just relax and escape. Maybe they'll find solace in the books, maybe they'll relate to Ramona, or maybe they'll just think it's a funny and easy-going series to read. I

This book offers up a perspective that most able-bodied students have never thought of or had to think of. Melody is constantly having to fight to be heard and respected by the people around her. In the book, we see how even the most well-meaning people can be insensitive when it comes to people with disabilities. Melody is often babied and underestimated, despite her being just as if not more intelligent than her peers.
Out of My Mind can open up a discussion with students about disability: how they view it, what their understanding of disability is, what misconceptions they might hold, etc.

I like this book because it depicts an African-American family in a normal context. I feel like oftentimes, in the search for diversity, we (as white people), end up only having books featuring BIPOC in situations of hardship and struggle. This book, however, is not one of those books.
I like how the dialect of the dialogue includes a lot of AAVE. It can make the black students who use AAVE feel seen and represented, and it can also serve as an lesson into another culture for non-black students.
The illustrations are warm and inviting and the depiction of a close-knit and loving family make The Patchwork Quilt a great story to have in the classroom.

Amazing Grace shows students that we are not stuck in the roles that others may try to put us in. Even though Grace's classmates tell her she can't play Peter Pan because he's a white boy and she's a black girl, she ignores them and goes after her dream role anyway. I think that's a really strong message for students to learn from. The idea that "you can be anything you want... if you put your mind to it," is important for students to hear, especially if it's not something they hear at home.
Amazing Grace is an opportunity for discussing things like race and gender roles with students, as well as times in which we might've put others down, or risen above expectations.

Throughout the book, each of the four main characters narrates a story that has to do with a question from the competition, as well as intertwines with the stories of the others. The way that the story unfolds will keep readers hooked from beginning to end.
This book is told from the point of view of five different people, each one offering a unique perspective. The teacher, Mrs. Olinski, is in a wheelchair. Throughout the book, she deals with ignorant students who harass her because of her disability. Julian Singh, one of the students, is an Indian immigrant from England. To others, he is a weird outsider because he's not used to the culture of the new area. To be able to hear his voice and how he views things offers children a perspective on the "weird kid" that they might not have considered before.

By showing how upset Kora-Jalimuso was when people were mean to her about her name, students who have more common-to-the-US names can learn not to make fun of other kids for something like that. It also teaches kids to love what makes them special. This book could also be paired with Chrysanthemum.
One issue I did have with this book was that Kora-Jalimuso had to be the one to educate her teacher and classmates. I don't really think it's fair to the child, but I'm sure it's the reality for a lot of people.

I only hope that this book could do for some of my future students what it did for me.
I also think that it can be helpful for students who have friends or other people in their lives that are LGBT+, as Drama specifically shows how Callie, a (most likely) straight person, figures out her own struggles with it.
It's also a graphic novel, which is something many students are drawn to!
(This book does include kissing, which I know some students will get very silly and excited about lol)

It can be potentially triggering for some students, but it can also be a tool for dealing with or learning about loss. There are also themes of religious confusion, similar to The Night Diary and Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.
There are both magical and realistic aspects to the book, so it can appeal to lovers of more than one genre.

This entire series is exciting from beginning to end, never once did I want to put the books down while reading them. There are many interesting topics like synesthesia, alchemy, secret societies, magic, and much more.
The narrator of the book is very Lemony Snicket from the Series of Unfortunate Events books. There are many times in which the narrator states that what he's saying is secret or dangerous or something else of that nature. This can be really appealing to kids, for it really makes them feel as if they're a part of the universe.
Another fun thing for kids to figure out is that each book in the series is associated with one of the five senses!
In one book, the characters infiltrate a chocolate plantation in the US, where they discover that they are using child labor. Like in Amal Unbound, this might be a little weird and uncomfortable for the children to read, although this book isn't quite as explicit about it.
Overall, The Secret Series is a fun and exciting series.

Matilda is deserving of a child audience because it has to do with children's empowerment. I think oftentimes children can feel really small in the world of adults, but this book offers an escape from that. Hopefully, it won't cause kids to start taking out creative revenge on their parents.
I also like that Matilda finds such comfort and is able to come to trust Miss Honey. It's important that students are able to trust their teachers.
Matilda does deal with ideas of child abuse and neglect, but not in a very straightforward or serious way.

There are lots of hidden and gracefully covered topics dispersed throughout the series. It deals with topics of single parenthood, disability, race, family, friendship, and many other things both explicitly and in metaphorical ways.
Greek mythology is something that is really interesting to some students, but it gets really inappropriate for children at times. Riordan incorporates loads of mythology into a modern and exciting setting, all written specifically for younger audiences.
There is also a lot of discussions on ADHD and Dyslexia. In this universe, every demi-god has ADHD and Dyslexia. Riordan actually included this detail for his son, who has both of these.

The book had me captivated throughout the entire time. There's magic, Chinese mythology, unlikely friendships, character development, and so much more - truly everything you could want in a children's novel.
This book is set in China and contains boatloads of references to Chinese culture and mythology, which can really broaden student's knowledge of the world.
One of my favorite parts of this book is watching Minli's mother grow from someone who hated stories to someone more fun and loving, as well as the life lesson that Minli learns on her journey. Sometimes the things you wish and yearn for are keeping you from seeing the beauty in your current situation.

There are books about dinosaurs, knights, mummies, pirates, ninjas, vikings, and so many other topics. There's so much to be learned from and discovered in this series. I also recently found out that there are non-fiction companions to many of the books in the series. These offer more information on the topics present in the novels.

This book is deserving of a child audience because it teaches them about a specific perspective from World War II, and further helps contextualize what they know about that time. It's also told from the point of view of a child, which helps them to better relate to the story. This book includes tales of immense bravery. Even though they could face death or worse, Annemarie's family works with the resistance to help save even just a few Jewish people from the terrible fate they would otherwise face. It teaches children to stick to your morals, and that doing what's right doesn't always mean doing what's expected.

This book focuses a lot on the civil rights movement that happened during the '60s in the US. It can be a good pairing to history lessons on that time period, prompting conversations about racism and social justice. It also deals with the topic of estranged parents and feeling abandoned/neglected/unwanted by your parent. That could possibly be a sensitive subject for some, but it could also be a powerful classroom tool to open up that discussion.

This can start a conversation about the stigma against poor people and wealth inequities.
There are also underlying themes of sexism, as Esperanza's mothers only two options after her husband dies are to either marry his brother, so she can stay in her home, or escape to the US.
At one point in the novel, immigration officials round-up and deport many Mexicans, even some that were natural-born Americans. It deals with sibling relationships and greed and temptations. It also features a Pakistani-American family and some different cultural ideas. It can do a lot to affirm readers in their experiences or offer a window into the viewpoint of an older sister.

Gawain the goose is really devoted to King Basil the bear and so he takes his job as Chief Guard of the Royal Treasury seriously. When rubies, then gold ducats, and finally the world-famous Kalikak diamond vanish from the treasure house, there is no way to account for the disappearances. Only Gawain and the King have keys!
Woe and misery must be borne--by Gawain, by King Basil and the entire community, as well as by the real thief--before the goose's good name is restored. Brought to trial, Gawain escapes from his faithless friends into lonely self-exile. Now the thief, burdened by guilt, sees that the right thing must be done and determines, heroically, to do it.
