Equality/Equity in the fashion industry

Thesis: the fashion industry benefits from institutionalized racism to get cheaper workforce but lacks of diversity in higher job positions. It also benefits from sexism most of said workforce is lead by women but only 14% of the high-end owners of these companies are women.

A study done by 24 different fashion magazines that interviewed both men and women concluded that 100% of the women thought sexism is a problem and should be changed while only 50% of men thought it was a problem. This same report also shows that men have 20% more probabilities to achieve executive positions in fashion companies than women. Crazy to think that an industry that benefits so much from the women's body and image can negate their knowledge and leadership.

I wanted my interview questions to focus on how this inequality (seen in many other industries as well) affects young individuals. How the glass ceiling women deal with since we are little, determines many of our career choices.

For the future of equality in the Fashion industry, I expect a lot more diversity in the workplace., more products made in the countries were it's being sold or where the brands are established and black/women/lgtbq+ owned businesses to have a lot more visibility.

I think the George Floyd protests are making a before and after in the fashion industry as well, not only because they are bringing up and giving visibility to many other issues apart from racism, but because a lot of people that didn't know much about the issue before are starting to learn now, and a whole lot more people are raising their voice to talk about inequality and being heard, and it's very palpable that even though there's still a long way to go, many brands are already starting to make a lot of changes to eradicate discrimination in their brands

Mental health X The fashion industry

Mental health environmental wise

Before covid-19

Mental health is, even these days, still some sort of taboo. People find it hard to talk about and feel like it’s something to be ashamed of. Never talking about your feelings or problems can cause serious mental health issues. Some might get there on their own, but the serious cases will only have a chance to get away if help is asked. Due to those facts, 14.2 per 100.000 people, commit suicide.

During covid-19

In corona times, a third of the Dutch are now facing more mental health problems than before. This is not only a problem in Holland, it’s worldwide. Being surrounded by dead, disease and uncertainty while being in lockdown can cause not only stress, but also anxiety and maybe even depressive thoughts and behavior. Not being able to go to your psychologist can lead to more problems and many people are facing this struggle.

What do we want after covid-19

More attention and awareness, but mostly acceptation, is needed for a better environment for those having mental issues. We want a community, a safe place, a team.

Mental health fashion wise

How it’s always been

Mental health issues are definitely caused by a lot of things and the fashion industry is one of them. Ideal body types, hair lengths, clothing from high end brands, tattoos, it’s a lot to look up to. All these ‘goals’ we feel we need to achieve are not reachable, still people are trying. Models are almost every girls role model so of course the ultimate ideal they create in their head looks like them.

What do we want it to be

Acceptance, that’s what’s needed to create a nice, safe environment for everyone. Body positivity, diversity, respect and loving each other for what we are.

Ceci: the picture inspires different ways in which reality could be represented or could exist, which are equality, equity and what's portrayed as reality. In relation with the fashion industry we could talk about production, and how the reality of it is very far away from any kind of equality or equity, since there is a huge difference between the different positions in the production process. Maybe it could also be talking about the consumer, where depending on the money and salary a person has, they can access a determined sector of in fashion, like shops and brands that people with less income could not access

Sustainable development X Fashion

•Covid-19 has put the apparel, footwear and textile industry’s sustainability transformations on pause. The fashion system is broken, but on the other hand, there are fresh opportunities to drive momentum if brands incorporate sustainability into their recovery plans.

•Customers and consumers are more ready for this than they ever have been in history. According to a McKinsey survey, 15 per cent of consumers in the US and Europe expect to buy more ecologically and socially sustainable clothing. Brands that are able to reorient their missions and business models in more sustainable ways will be able to cater to a more captive audience than ever before. Fashion players may also turn to more innovative ways to reduce stock and reinfuse value into their products, such as accelerating nascent sustainability trends. Over time, it’s likely that costs for many more sustainable materials will come down, as greater demand creates a bigger market for fabrics currently seen as specialised.

•Luxury consumers are also likely to, at least for the time being, adopt the “fewer, better things” mantra that environmentalists have been advocating over the past decade. While this could spur increased activity in the second-hand and rental channels once fear around the virus contagion subsides, it also means that many consumers will be looking for so-called “investment” pieces — minimalist, last-forever items — that feel more responsible given the state of the world. “Call it cautious consumption,” said Mario Ortelli, managing partner of luxury advisors Ortelli & Co. “It will take more to justify a purchase.”

•For the future everyone and especially the Fashion industry should rethink our 17 SDGs. Is it still enough to have just 17 sustainable goals? Which goals were damaged during the pandemic and how fashion can contribute to them?

• As the world responds to the effects of this brutal pandemic, and seeks to restore global prosperity, we must focus on addressing underlying factors in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals. We must not, and cannot relent in our efforts, even amid this painful pandemic. While some of the gains on the SDGs have been eroded, this should not deflate our efforts. They should rather spur us to accelerate and deepen our efforts during this Decade of Action to ‘recover better’, and build a healthier, safer, fairer and a more prosperous world, so necessary in avoiding future pandemics.(United Nations)

Ceci: It's very clear to me that it's something necessary when creating a brand both for the people that create said brand as well as the workforce or really anyone involved in creating the brand. They should create equity especially in the production process, to create a fair environment you could say. There should be a sense of justice when creating a brand/company, because any time you create something if you want to make it right you should make it fair for everyone, like favoring the ones that are being more harmed while keeping in mind the others as well, so your brand is based on good values

Ceci: It's obvious that there's no to very little equality/equity in the industry, as I mentioned before, specially in the production process, you just need to see the income of the different sector of the production process to see that that's nowhere close to equality. Personally it affects me, because I see it and I'm aware of the problem, but in my real life it doesn't really affect me , if i go to a shop and buy a t shirt, it's not really affecting me the process behind the making of said t shirt,, socially I mean
