Research Gap

Papers can therefore include:

· 3-4,000 pieces reflecting on examples of resilience in the delivery of adult education including abstracts, references, figures and table captions

· longer academic papers between 7- 9000 words, inclusive of abstracts, references, figures and table captions

Authors will be aske to select ‘special issue' title when submitting their papers to ScholarOne

Expected timeline is:

Submission of abstracts (500 words): 30.06.2025

Submission of full papers for review: 30.05.2026

Publication of Special Issue: Spring 2027

Resilience in Adult Education

Recent decades have witnessed significant changes in the global adult education landscape. The space for providing adult education for personal growth, community development, active citizenship and social movements has been steadily squeezed as learning for employability and skills has come to dominate. This has resulted in the restructuring/closing down of institutions and departments offering adult education and /or the refocusing of provision to skills-based courses as well as lack of investment in community-based adult education. However, spheres of resilience to the narrowing focus of adult education do exist. Space for a form of adult education in its broadest sense has been able to maintain a presence, albeit often in smaller and/or restructured form. These processes have not been without challenges as attempts to navigate the policy and funding contexts attest.

This Special Issue seeks to better understand the challenges, successes, and experiences of continuing to deliver adult education as a means of providing opportunities

· for ‘learning for learning’ and lifewide learning

· to foster democratic and civic participation within the context of the neoliberal model of education that increases social inequality and drives a more competitive society and economy.

With this focus, we invite contributions that pursue educational theoretical, empirical, comparative, international or autobiographical perspectives that illuminate potential relations and areas of tension in relation to resilience in adult education.

We are not seeking to define resilience but rather wish to give voice to the wide ranging forms of resilience adopted by adult educators in times of precarity, where they have challenged the narrowing focus of adult education in the spaces that they live and work, where they have harnessed resources in order to sustain well-being, actions, and interventions, and /or ‘built relationships and connections that strengthen each other rather than undermining and weakening all’ (von Kotze, 2022: 13). Through this, we seek to critically reframe the concept of resilience in the provision of adult education.

The Special Issue calls for papers:

· from researchers and practitioners in adult education who have adopted different forms of resilience

· that showcase how beyond institutional educational contexts, other spaces have been reclaimed and groups have formed as a means of providing opportunities for ‘learning for learning’ and fostering democratic and civic participation.

· that give voice to those individuals who have been able to maintain a presence in some educational institutions, albeit often in smaller and/or restructured form
