The Inty Raymi takes place every year, from the 17th to the 23rd of June, is the symbol of the gratitude of the Andean people who offer to the Paccha Mama (mother earth), for the goodness of having allowed a good production and harvest of traditional products. People show their thankfulness with music and dance and food.

La Mama Negra

The Mama Negra is a traditional festival held twice a year in Latacunga, Cotopaxi Province, Ecuador. Also called La Santísima Tragedia (The Holy Tragedy), it is a celebration in honor of the Virgen de la Merced (Virgin of Mercy), who is said to have stopped an eruption of Cotopaxi volcano in 1742. The festival is also a celebration of the anniversary the city of Latacunga's independence.

Where and when is it celebrated?
This festival is celebrated in Ambato during Carnival in Febuary or March.
What is its origin?
It is a conmemoration to the people who died during the earthquacke of the 1940s in Tungurahua.
Characteristics:
During the festival, representants of all neighbourhoods dance and showcase elaborate carts in a parade. The spectators are polite and well mannered as a sign of respect to the origins of the festivity.
We are interested in it because:
The celebration is a staple of the richness of the land and people are always on their best behaviour, keeping conforntations to a minimum during the parades.
