A Time to Dance by Padma Venkatraman

Padma Venkatraman’s inspiring story of a young girl’s struggle to regain her passion and find a new peace is told lyrically through verse that captures the beauty and mystery of India and the ancient bharatanatyam dance form. This is a stunning novel about spiritual awakening, the power of art, and above all, the courage and resilience of the human spirit.

“Veda, a classical dance prodigy in India, lives and breathes dance—so when an accident leaves her a below-knee amputee, her dreams are shattered. For a girl who’s grown used to receiving applause for her dance prowess and flexibility, adjusting to a prosthetic leg is painful and humbling. But Veda refuses to let her disability rob her of her dreams, and she starts all over again, taking beginner classes with the youngest dancers. Then Veda meets Govinda, a young man who approaches dance as a spiritual pursuit. As their relationship deepens, Veda reconnects with the world around her, and begins to discover who she is and what dance truly means to her.“

Freckle is an online math resource tool that I have started using with my 5th-7th graders for resource. Freckle offered interactive math lessons and review lessons as well as practice assessments that you as the teacher can interact with. Freckle has a lot of useful tools on the screen that help work kids though problems when they are stuck, they also have fun games for practice and great enrichment exercises for lessons. My school this year is piloting it for our middle school math and its been a hit so far! Katherine

Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist by Judith Heumann

I am recommending this book as a must-read because it is such a real, unfiltered look into the life of a child as she deals with her identity as a wheelchair user in a time so very different from today. Heumann shares very personal truths and I was left with another layer of understanding what the struggles were and many times still are for the disabled community.

Heumann shows us that there is a difference between having a disability and being treated like you have a disability. Anyone who wants to walk (or roll) a mile in the shoes of a person in a wheelchair, this is the book for you!

This week I want to share an article that I read for another class. The article is titled Autism - It’s Different in Girls. I think that this article has great information for teachers of students with autism. It can help teachers understand that boys and girls who are in the spectrum can present very different characteristics. For example, "studies have found that autistic girls exhibit less repetitive behavior than boys do" (Szalavitz, 2016). Autistic girls also show more interest in connecting with other children while "boys do not care whether they have friends or not "(Szalavitz, 2016). We need to remember that we cannot approach and teach boys and girls with autism the same way and expect them to have the same outcomes. We need to consider their differences and approach their learning in an individualized way.

Szalavitz, M. (2016).

Hands Are Not for Hitting By Martine Agassi Free Spirit Publishing, Inc.
I have used this as part of Behavior Intervention Plan for a third grade student with Autism. When given a non preferred activity or removed from a non preferred activity, this student hits an adult to get his way. Having to listen to this audio book has helped the child understand how hands can be used for many other things. Mentioned below is part of the pdf shared by my school counselor how to use this book.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma1F9QHAYJg
Hands Are Not for Hitting is a story about alternative actions and activities that children and adults can do with their hands instead of hitting. It teaches correct use of hands in an encouraging way through the use of simple language and descriptive illustrations that makes learning fun. The story helps children understand why they may feel like hitting and offers many ways one can deal with feelings by replacing the use of hitting with alternative skills. Suggested alternatives to hitting are: use of feeling words, ways of letting your feeling out in a non-violet manner, problem-solving, trying to understand how others might feel when you hit, and how to use one’s hands appropriately. At the end of the story there are many supplemental ideas for parents and teachers to support the reading of this story and to reinforce children’s understanding of using hands in an appropriate manner. This book is available in a simpler board book version for children who are developmentally younger. (Ages 2-8) Examples of activities that can be used while reading Hands Are Not for Hitting and throughout the day to promote social and emotional development: While reading the story, demonstrate the suggestions throughout the book: handshaking, clapping, blowing kisses, pointing, etc. Children can practice what we can do with our hands. While reading the story, have children talk about how they might feel when someone hits them. Help them problem solve by coming up with solutions of what they can do instead of hitting. Write feelings and solutions on a chart. Give children several scenarios and play a game of “What could you do instead of hitting?” Examples below: Someone took the car you were playing with. What could you do? Someone knocked your blocks down. What could you do? Someone bumped into you in line. What could you do? You want to be first in line. What could you do? Someone picked up your beads and they fell off the string. What could you do? Use a popsicle stick with “stop” on one side and “go” on the other. Give children a variety of situations and ask them if they should “stop or go”. Examples below” The girl helps her friend pull a wagon. The boy hits his mom. The girl rams her trike into the trike in front of her. The boy hugs her friend.

Have the children make a “helping hands” chain. Trace and cut out multiple hands for each child. Place them in a pocket or baggy that is easily accessible. Catch children using their hands to help others or to be a friend. As you recognize a child’s helping hand behavior, have the child get a hand from their pocket and connect it to the class’s “helping hand” chain. The hands can be placed on the wall to wrap around the room, or in the hall to link with a neighboring class. On a regular basis, celebrate how long the helping hand chain is getting! As a story review, ask the children “What can you do with your hands?” As the children’s answer, write or draw a picture to make a class list of “what our hands can do.” The children can also demonstrate what their hands can do and you can take photographs of the children in action. The photographs can be added to the class list and posted. Reading the same book for several days in a row is a great way to provide opportunities for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers to develop a sense of competence and confidence, which is an important part of social and emotional development. They become able to turn pages, point at and label pictures, talk about the story, predict what will happen next, learn new vocabulary words, talk about their own experiences in relation to the story and even make up their own story! Try reading Hands Are Not For Hitting for several days in a row and use some of the ideas, activities, and teaching opportunities listed below to enhance social and emotional skills.

“Loser”, a book by Jerry Spinelli, is centered around Donald Zinkoff’s life as a middle school student. Just like other kids, Zinkoff rides his bike, hopes for snow days, and wants to be like his dad when he grows up. But Zinkoff also raises his hand with all the wrong answers, trips over his own feet, and falls down with laughter over a word like "Jabip."

Other kids have their own words to describe him, but Zinkoff is too busy to hear it. He doesn't know he's not like everyone else, and one winter night, Zinkoff's differences show that any name can someday become "hero."

Although the book does not clearly state if Zinkoff has a learning disability, we all know that he is "different" from most other kids. I absolutely love this story and I wanted to share it with everyone. I think “Loser '' is a great book to be shared with classroom students to help build their empathy and acceptance towards others who might not look and/or behave in the ways we see “normal”.

This is perfect classroom read!

There are many more features that I haven't got a chance to explore in-depth with it yet. - Nora

In my school, recommended skills are assigned to students depending on what skills they need to learn in subjects like Math/ Reading or Science, Social Studies. I like this app. as this helps me assign skills where students who are auditory learners or are still struggling to read are assigned an audio version. For many skills there is an option of text to speech for children to listen to the question and even listen to the options to answer correctly. This has benefitted my students to work independently in school and at home. If an answer is incorrect, this app explains how to get the right answers. So children understand and are able to finish given task successfully.

Second, it relates to module 3 readings. Elizabeth Bonker has not spoken since she was 15 months old, but with the help of her peers, teachers, and technology she graduated at the top of her class. She used text-to-speech software to deliver the commencement address. This article shows that it is possible for all students to accomplish great things!

At 32 years old Jasmine was diagnosed with autism. Now she is balancing raising two autistic kids while also embracing her own identity.

I found this video very interesting, informal and touching. I know this class focus on working with children with Autism, but those children will soon grow into adults. Listening to jasmine's story raised so many questions. It also made me aware of the topic of Autistic mothers, possible situations I never thought about, like Autistic parents raising Autistic children or marriage and Autism. I think this was a great video, and I hope you all enjoy it!
-Nytara

This is a great resource for students to learn how to spell words that may be challenging and for creating a curriculum in ELA.

It goes as follows:

"Far too many classrooms, particularly for Black and brown learners, are complianced-based. Meaning the teacher has decided where you will sit, how you will sit, how you will learn, how you will take it (education) in. And there are very few supports for changing that. And so being purposeful and motivated means that there is a license to learn the way I (the student) needs to, that I (the student) get to execute the expertise that I (the student) knows about myself (the student) and learning."

I feel that a lot of my foundational education was complianced-based. There wasn't much student input in what we were learning or much effort taken to identify how I as a student learned based upon evidence of my strenghths and talents. The more teachers who understand that purposeful teaching and student motivation lays in letting the student execute thier own knowledge and inside genius, the better learned opportunitiess will exist for both student and educator.

In the video, the curriculum and design specialist at CAST, Allison Posey, and the CAST author, Andratesha Fritzgerald, held a webinar discussion of her book, Antiracism and Universal Design for Learning: Building Expressways to Success. They shared many strategies from the book on how to include brown and black learners in the classroom. My takeaway from the video is that UDL and antiracism come hand in hand if we want to support all learners, including those of the minority race. Like Claudette Colvin’s teacher, all educators should provide their learners an environment to explore their interests, find their desire, and build their courage to spark knowledge of wisdom. The analogy of the orange construction barrel Fritzgerald used towards the end of the video was encouraging. She stated that there will be lots of barriers as we try to implement antiracism and UDL in our classroom, but it is only temporary as the orange construction barrels, we see on the road. The path will be completed someday, and our journey will be smoother, but if we hold back and do not take action in moving towards our goal of supporting all learners, injustice will continue.

My thoughts about the videos: I found Antiracism and Universal Design for Learning with Andratesha Fritzgerald very interesting. This video caused me to question myself and my style of teaching. I asked myself, “Have I sparked a revolution in my classroom?” Am I using UDL to develop our antiracist practices? The video caused me to examine and assess what happens daily and weekly with my students. The video spoke about empowering the learners to be in charge of their learning and the learning environment.

I work at a 97% African American school. I do not have any other race of students in my 2nd-grade classroom but I do expose them to multicultural learning through our ELA, Social Science, and Science lessons. My students are from low-income families that live in the Marshallfield Garden apartments or Evergreen low riser housing. During the first quarter of the school year, I spent time getting to know my students and families. I needed to introduce the students and families to various resources, opened up different lines of communication, and found learning strategies that worked for them. It was important for them to see something different than what they see and have in their environment as well as how to access/use the various resources they have in the classroom/community and environment to communicate their thoughts, ideas, and learning. The message that I desire for my students to receive is that they are masterminds and are capable of learning despite their environment, i.e. poor living conditions, and drug and gang-infested neighborhoods. I want them to understand that some may just express their learning differently. That is why my classroom name is Miggins Masterminds.

In all honesty, UDL is needed in the classroom, but I don’t believe that the Board of Education wants this form of learning implemented into the classroom or curriculum. This type of learning is a constructivist style of teaching and learning and I believe that the BOE prefers a positivist style of teaching and learning according to the curriculums that they have offered and required the educators to use.

Video # 1: Sharing Stories: Antiracism and Universal Design for LearningThis is a great presentation! It emphasizes the responsibility to challenge mindsets and systems that stifle Black and Brown learners. I liked the tips at the end of the video about UDL; where Universally designed lessons will make class safer for all students but especially black and brown learners. I also liked the powerful quote from the book "Antiracism and Universal Design for Learning" by Andratesha Fritzgerald “We cannot, in good conscience or good teaching, stand by and watch another generation be marginalized because we don't take action. Inaction is agreement. Inaction is racism. Inaction is injustice. Inaction is inhumane. Inaction is not an option”.

The video "Sharing Stories: Antiracism and Universal Design for Learning has a compelling and moving message. When the speaker Ms. Fritzgerald, asked, "Have you brought the revolution?" to your place, It made me think about my purpose as an educator. Have I done enough to spark a revolution with students and other educators? I want to believe that I have brought positive changes to the lives of my young students and other educators. My students are African Americans who all live in public housing buildings. I bought multiple books for my classroom because it is critical for African American children to see themselves and their life experiences represented in stories. I know how vital representation is. I have brought some revolution to my school by ensuring I go at the best pace for all my students learning styles. I also go against the curriculum and choose alternative books, videos, and other means of educating materials that are more relevant and meaningful to my students. As an educator, I will continue to promote a culturally responsive learning environment.

After watching the videos provided, I was able to get a clear understanding of both The Universal Design for Learning and understanding Differentiating Instruction. In the first video, It talks about how important it is to set up an environment where black and brown students can feel safe and actually believe in their brilliance. As an educator, you must give them the opportunities to thrive in a way that best fits them. In order to do that, it is important to allow options to allow them to demonstrate their knowledge. In the video the Woman presenting this webinar explains how after reading the story of Romeo and Juliet her teacher gave the class 9 project options. She explained one way was to draw, dress up as a character and even rap. She explained how she rapped to one of Dr. Dre’s songs. As we listened to her explain this, you could feel the sense of belonging. The teacher allowed her to find success in something that was also culturally appropriate to her. Hearing this inspired me. I also thought it was interesting to hear that no one is born “woke,” but you will always find something that awakens you.

The next three videos really explained the difference between UDL and differentiated instruction. I was very impressed with the dinner party analogy. It made both concepts very clear, yet with a twist. The UDL model allows options for all students. The “buffet” option at the dinner party. This gives them a chance to demonstrate their knowledge with options. Some may have stronger areas and this allows them to showcase their brilliance in one category rather than another. In order to implement the UDL model it is crucial that educators are flexible. Students do not all learn in the same ways. As an educator, we must always remember that options are key. With differentiating instruction, the teacher has a common goal but may give different students two options. In the video the teacher explains that through weeks of assessments she was able to see where students were in the comprehension areas. As she knew this, she gave different assignments to different students. One assignment being harder than the other. The different tiers also allow for instruction to be presented in different ways to better adapt to the learning of the different students.

Olivia O'Donovan

Anti-racism and UDL

I enjoyed listening to Andratesha Fritzgerald discuss her book and work on applying anti-racism to UDL. The discussion with the CAST moderator began with the summary of her main idea: teachers need to work toward UDL to create environments “where learners feel safe, and they feel they belong.” At a glance, that is an “of course!” statement, but as the speaker/author pointed out a lot of traditional USA education is “compliance based.” Historically, teachers have made all the decisions and controlled everything about the education experience. This is certainly how I grew up in education. I liked learning about Claudette, the 15-year-old who was the first to refuse to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus and thinking about her having a teacher that helped her find that spark and strength to make the first pivotal step which had far reaching positive consequences. Another key takeaway for me was the quote: “honor is an accelerant”. I think of this statement as meaning that showing respect and appreciation for students’ cultures and experiences helps to build trust and relationships more rapidly. The talk made me think a lot about how much a teacher can send messages to students through their class and material designs, even unintentionally—the messages can be positive or sadly very negative. We must make students empowered to know themselves and show what they know in ways that work best for them. To me, these are also a wonderful lifelong skill that reaches far beyond the classroom. Knowing your own strengths and preferences, and advocating for yourself is a also huge skill for the workplace or even relationships! As Ms. Fritzgerald pointed out at the end of her talk (using the orange barrel analogy), redesigning education to include choices for students, involving the students in learning their own preferences and giving such flexibility will initially take a lot of work for educators. But as she points out, the “orange barrels” don’t last forever, eventually the new UDL system will not require so much extra effort for the teacher. Krista Austin SPE 527 - Spring 2022

In the video Antiracism and Universal Design for Learning, Andratesha Fitzgerald provide wonderful insight of what a classroom environment would be like if schools combine Antiracism and UDL. She provided great strategies like acknowledging every student learning abilities, making students fill welcome and valued, and providing students a positive outlook on their capabilities. One thing that really stuck with me is when she spoke about making sure that the classroom environment isn’t compliance based, because it promotes oppression. I have seen first-hand that compliance base environments places fear and doubt onto children, which in returns causes their minds to shut down to any learning. I also like how she spoke about designing classroom environments that supports students’ confidence to show you what they know, in order to encourage and expands learner.

In the second video The Dinner Part Analogy, she used a dinner party as an example for implementing Universal Design for Learning in the classroom. Instead of stressing about what wedding guest will or can/cannot eat, providing a buffet will allow guess to choose to food they like, can or want to eat. When comparing this to students we have to anticipate and predict the variability of our students interests, wants or needs by providing them various learning tasks that fosters their ability to learn and encourage learning by creating firm goals and flexible means.

In the two differentiating instruction videos they explain how teachers need to differentiate content despite having to follow curriculum content. They discussed the ways to provide differentiation for students like developing lessons for students that provide a variety of learning task that have different complexity. Therefore, not providing every student the same level task, but providing task that students can succeed and yet be challenged to explore further in there learning.

As for the video antiracism and universal design for learning with Andratesha Fritzgerald I learned so much, there were so many ideas I was ready to implement inside my classroom. I am currently in the process of ordering cap and gowns to take pictures of all my students, so they can themselves in a form of success. We are requested to show how all our students will be successful, and for students to see themselves in a cap and gown in second grade gives them something to look forward to soon. Thank you for that video it was very enlightening.

Even though we've learned a ton in recent years about how to support autistic students in our classrooms, meeting their needs can still be quite difficult. We occasionally struggle with students who have been diagnosed with autism due to their varied learning methods and sensory requirements.

Some preferred resources are listed below. Some of the books on this list can be used in the classroom as resources and as experimental teaching techniques. Others are narrative and created to assist individuals with neurotypical development in comprehending what it's like to view the world from the perspective of autism. In either case, if you work with students who have autism, you should have at least one (or five!) of these books in your library.
Click on link to view all 12 books.
https://www.weareteachers.com/12-essential-books-teaching-kids-autism/

Trina J.

One thing that stood out the most is that we must speak up for our students, we have to empathize with our students, and create a learning environment that is comfortable for all students. Another takeaway, everyone in the classroom is expected to teach and share. We can all learn something from one another, but we must create an environment that students will be comfortable to showcase their gifts and talents.

The videos, “What is UDL?” and “Sharing Stories: Antiracism and Universal Design for Learning,” allowed me to explore more closely how UDL has shifted over time and how racism affected the role of education. Through the framework of UDL, students are given a more active role in their learning as they become self-directed in determining what works best based on how they learn. They are provided more resources to explore their learning and take responsibility of what they learn in the classroom. Although differentiated instruction is great as a guide for students to explore their abilities, UDL is more determined to make the learner become more active in how they want to learn and demonstrate their learning. The Antiracism video discussed the importance of being an advocate for our students and creating an environment that allows them to feel comfortable in the classroom. In doing so, our students will feel encouraged to learn and grow academically.

Unless you believe teaching and education should be exclusionary, what other arguments are there to be counter- UDL? That’s the thing though, even our beliefs – assumptions, perceptions – what have you, maybe even that still underlies the ideology of UDL.

I go to a University where my rights in regards to learning disorders just simply aren’t protected. Even despite the fact that my professors mostly have a doctorate degree where you’d assume they’d be the least likely to reinforce ableism. This control is especially felt once you decide to pursue higher education. This “license to learn” really ends up coming down to the individual teacher or professor – which is scary. It’s a lot of power. And until federal laws are put into place, you can just expect that people will take advantage of antiracist practices – or any practices of intersections of identities of inequality.

I think the video on Antiracism and UDL shed light on a very important topic. Sometimes as educators, assumptions are made about a student's capabilities or lack thereof. The implementation of UDL ultimately helps provide students with the necessary skills and strategies needed to approach their learning. In reality, all people are different, each student is different, and everyone learns differently. Therefore, when instructing students and providing one-on-one support, it is essential to allow students to be in control of their own learning. They should have choices in their daily instruction, activities, and routines such as how they learn, where they sit, and how they sit.
I personally think it's sad that this video had to be put into the context of the necessity of using UDL for brown and black learners. I think more teachers need to be trained on how to be culturally responsive inside their classrooms with black and brown students. We need to create environments in which children feel comfortable, powerful, empowered, and fearless during their learning journey. UDL can help teachers practice antiracism, as well as antidiscrimination. A student who is verbally encouraged and provided with the needed support and assistance will feel like he/she can do anything, and essentially it will be true because that is how the classroom is set up In my opinion, most of the UDL practices pertaining to engagement, representation, action, and expression should be universally implemented across school systems to ensure that all students receive a quality education and receive the support needed to academically succeed. Allowing students to exercise their voice, build their independence, and take accountability for their own learning will help them grow personally and academically. They will feel valued and therefore put forth more effort to be successful.
I love the idea of a destination mentioned by Andratesha Fritzgerald. Once I started speaking to my students about transitioning to 2nd grade, and the skills needed to continue to advance to the next level, their language and focus changed. They started expressing "I want to practice my handwriting so I can write in cursive in 2nd grade. I want to become fluent in reading so I can read on my own in 2nd grade. I need to know my sight words because as I go to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc . the words I will learn will build off of the words I am already supposed to know." I truly saw the difference the language I used in class made; a huge impact on the desire to learn more, do their best, and grow was fostered by some motivational words and affirmations.
I also appreciate the acknowledgment of multiple means of representation. In my classroom next year, I will provide my students will print, audio, and videos to ensure they understand the expectations or the new concepts being introduced. This will help my students feel confident and in control of their learning.

Watching this video explaining how educators can use their influence and authority in a classroom to promote antiracism within UDL standards was inspiring. I was moved by Ms. Fritzgerald's passion and knowledge behind the writings in her book and her hope for the future. As someone who considers herself an ally to every marginalized group of people in the United States, the fact that this video was being broadcast all over the world to educators made me hopeful that we are the generation of teachers that look at and see our black and brown students as capable instead of through a deficit lens. As a first year teacher, I can relate to what she was saying about 'setting the table' for all students, all capabilities, all passions, and all races. Whenever I introduced a book about a different culture, there was always one or two voices that often went unsung that would light up and relate. I hope to display more books like reflect more students in my classroom, even if I do not have a student of color, I want to show my white students that their stories exist, and are celebrated. Learning can be a curve in itself, I hope to structure classrooms that are accessibly and comfortable for the diverse learners and a culturally diverse population as well. I am proud to be a second generation Latina educator in Chicago because I grew up seeing schools inadvertently diminish or stereotype black children. I want to be a positive change in the world and I can't think of a better place to begin than in my classroom. I loved this video and discussion and will be ordering the book to read at the beach this summer. Thank you

Antiracism and UDL

Watching the Antiracism and UDL for learning for Andratesha Fritzgerald was very eye-opening and informative. Personally, I found it quite sad that this video had to be made in the first place – we should all have anti-racism ideologies and create anti-racist classroom environments; however, that’s not the America that we live in today. Listening to Ms. Fitzgerald talk about Claudett was extremely moving and reflective. Claudett was a 15-year-old black student who refused to give up her seat to a white reporter. She was in a classroom environment that engaged, interest her, and taught her about her own right, civil rights, and the history before her. It was because her teacher provided a culturally responsive environment that encouraged her to advocate for herself. This is something that I aspire to do for my students – provide an environment where they feel safe, respected, and inspired to learn through a culturally responsive curriculum. To do so – Fitzgerald emphasized the importance of UDL. We are so used to the education system that contains our students in a box – in a box that is controlled by teachers, where students learn how we want to or how we think it’s best. With this, they perceive a negative mindset and perspective about themselves. Yet, that is not the case. Fritzgerald states that we need to create an environment that fits their needs. She states UDL antiracism learning is helping students find those strategies that work for them and allow the environment to be transformed to their needs. A strategy that she gives us is to let our students express themselves and what they know through their own way of interests, such as blogging, podcasts, drawing etc. This empowers our students by letting them know that they are capable of success – we just need to mold our environment and curriculum to them. After watching this, I really want to read her book over the summer to implement an anti-racist UDL way of learning in my classroom.

Melody moved me. I love that her ambition, passion for learning, and not giving up were extraordinary. The cards are stacked against her, but she finds a way to shine. She has an impressive motivation to be the best she can be. She worked extremely hard to learn Elvira (Medi-Talker). Then she blew out all the kids in the general education class for a national completion called Whiz Kids. She didn't let the students who left her behind stop her driving when going to Washington, DC. Yes, she was hurt but she kept being the best she could be. Her story was so intriguing that I purchased the sequel, "Out of My Heart." I have not read it yet, but I hope to see great success. I feel that Melody will conquer the world and break the stereotype of individuals with cerebral palsy.

The most powerful part of the book is when Melody gets her Medi-Talker. She named it Elvira, after her favorite song. Elvira was able to be custom-fitted to Melody's needs. Melody no longer needs to point to individual words to talk. Melody worked with Mrs. V on creating phrases. Melody was able to select the voice. She was so excited to tell her mom that she loved her. She can be involved in a conversation with Rose and other people in her life. She was able to show how motivated, intelligent, witty, and creative she is. Melody's mom didn't have to assume what Melody was thinking.

I was upset with Rose and Mr. D in this book. I thought Rose was a true friend to Melody. They appeared to have a great connection. However, peer pressure got in the way of their friendship. Rose knew students were meeting up before going to Washington, DC, for breakfast. Rose could have called to let her know. But I am even more upset with Mr. D. He is the adult and the teacher! How dare he omits one of the students on his Whiz Kid team! This book was written from the point of view of Melody. However, I would like to know Rose and Mr. D's viewpoints. Did they not like that she was getting the spotlight from the media? Were they embarrassed to make it to nationals with a student with cerebral palsy? It just breaks my heart that they did not see her as an intelligent and resourceful team member.

I wanted to share this video because it really went step by step of what occurs in an IEP meeting. As someone who has never been in an IEP meeting, that is something that does scare me and I would love to have more experience with. This video helps provide information of what to expect and how to respond to family concerns and perhaps even refusal for certain services or recommendations.

However, when such accommodations are combined with and constrained by a traditional, rigid curriculum, the result can be the opposite of inclusion with. a "typical" student in mind. Often there is a way for all students to learn the material, such as a lecture or slide show.

Assessment the UDL & Differentiated Way

This week was full of interesting ideas that may be used in Universal Designs of Learning! In the film, they highlighted the legal duties that schools must meet. Schools are required to make testing accommodations for students who qualify under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. The video demonstrates various accommodations, including text-to-speech, color masking, and longer time, as well as examining alternate routes. To maintain coherence and efficiency, those handling varied accommodations must receive thorough training.aining. It is vital for parents, educators, and staff to work together to ensure that the strategies are well-informed and and efficient. "UDL is a framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning based on what we know about the human brain." (Universal Design for Learning|CAST, n.d.) There are three core principles of UDL. These principles are Engagement, representation, and action and expression. Engagement is the "why" of learning. Representation is the "what" of learning, and the action and expression are the "how" of learning. UDL is based on the notion that each learner has a unique learning style, and this framework encourages all educators to work with these unique qualities and help design an experience that works for all. UDL is all about advocating for differentiation among the students within the classroom. Differentiation starts by figuring out what and how the students learn. Additionally, comprehending the optimal learning environment for the student is crucial.

References

Dwyer-Kuntz, T. (2022). UDL in online learning - One size doesn’t fit all.
Assessment on UDL the Differentiated Way

An impactful idea that I gathered from this module is learning about the Universal Design For Learning. The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) ensures that’’ learning experiences in school, the workplace, and in life are thoughtfully designed ‘’ (CAST, 2025, p. 1). Learning experiences must be beneficial for all learners. Furthermore, UDL is designed to elevate strengths, and to eliminate barriers because everyone deserves the opportunity to grow and thrive (CAST, 2025, p. 1). This makes UDL an impactful tool for learning. UDL guides educators to address diversity in learning through engagement, representation, action, and expression.

Engagement ensures that educators recruit interest, sustain effort, demonstrate persistence, and self-regulation (CAST, 2025, p. 6). Learning must be interesting for students. Representation ensures that there is perception, language, symbols, and comprehension (CAST, 2025, p. 6). UDL ensures that there is something to learn. UDL ensures that action and expression can have some physical action, communication, and executive function (CAST, 2025, p. 6). This is how learning is demonstrated through UDL.

A differentiated resource that is beneficial is the partnership between Cast and some PreK-12 Professionals. This partnership ensures that coaches, teachers, and administrators have some transformational change (Cast, 2025, p. 3). The transformational change can be unique. Educators can implement UDL to assure that knowledge and skills reshape pedagogical practices (Cast, 2025, p. 3). This demonstrates that a partnership between Cast and some PreK-12 Professionals is impactful. This partnership’s objective is to have a system where there are closed achievement gaps, support for English learners and students with IEPS (Cast, 2025, p. 3). This will strength the school culture. For this reason, a partnership between CAST and some PreK-12 Professionals is beneficial.

An assessment that is beneficial for educators is the one that will advance a postsecondary education. This assessment will ensure that students recognize their strengths, develop leadership skills, and that they learn strategies for lifelong learning (UDL, 2025, p. 3). Assessments must prepare students for the real world. This type of assessment will ensure that a wide variety of learners are helped (UDL, 2025, p. 5). Meaning that they will recognize their strengths.
