The Struggle With Arts in Science

I think if you take "Arts" at its most basic definition to be actual art, I don't struggle implementing this aspect of STEAM. But taking what we've learned in this class and realizing that "Arts" actually includes music, writing, literature, history, all of the humanities, I realize there are a lot of things I'm missing. Yes I have students write CERs which hits the writing aspect, I have students collaborate and communicate which falls into 21st century skills and humanities as well, but I could definitely be incorporating more into my STEAM lessons and projects. I default to students making something, like a model of an atom or building a roller coaster, or building an igloo, but I also struggle to add the other attributes of arts. I saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 this morning and there was one scene (no spoilers I promise!) where someone mentions the idea that you can be brilliant, but if you're not creative and innovative it means nothing. The "A" in STEAM lends itself to that idea perfectly.

How Can I Incorporate Arts?

The reading mentioned music and I think that's a great way to get away from the idea that "A" has to mean actual artwork. There is a Periodic Table song, some math teachers have had their students make math raps - these are ideas I could incorporate into my lessons.

I know our last class touched on the dangers of social media, however I've seen some teachers on TikTok do content related dances. It sounds silly, but it is something the kids would relate to! I could have them take some vocabulary words and make a little TikTok dance to demonstrated the concept (ex: potential energy they stay still and raise their arms, kinetic energy they go crazy and move a lot. They could also demonstrate the difference in molecular movement for a solid liquid and gas by being close together and swaying slowly for a solid, spreading a bit and flowing past each other for a liquid, and running all over the place for a gas).

My final idea is similar to things I've been doing and having students create models. I could change it and allow for more creativity by giving them various options for how they could create their artifact rather than having each student do the same exact thing.
