This is a biographical tale as the narrator discusses his grandparents' and parents' lives. Two main characters fought as Confederates in the Civil War and another character is prejudice against indigenous people. There are allusions to Christianity as well.

These are all important things to discuss, but must be handled carefully.

I want to own that my biases and beliefs effect how I view this book and ways in which to engage with it.
