As a High School student, I'm exposed to violence in schools more often than I should be. Whether it's physical, mental, or both - violence in schools is NOT acceptable in any way.

Violence in school can come in the form of fights, verbal scuffles, and much more.

The effects of being violent are detrimental.
SIRS Researcher: "School Violence: A Changing Culture"

Summarize:

This article reaches into the depths of school shootings and pulls out that they are not as dangerous and frequent as the world makes them out to be. Also, it highlights how schools have the capability to make themselves safer.

Assess:

This article was an integral and useful source to rely on, because of the skewed perspective it takes on violence in schools. Rather than making it sound extreme, it claims that the media and world make the issue a lot more prominent than it needs to be. For example, they say that "With over 130,000 schools in the US, the probability of a violent school incident, though increasing, is still low.".

For this source, it was not as important to know whether it was reliable or not. A lot of the statements made in the text are opinion-based, rarely pulling direct quotes. However, it was published by a respectable university.

The goal of this source was to provide reasons as to why the author believes that school violence is oversaturated as a common and dangerous thing that everyone needs to worry about. Later in the paper, they do also aim to explain that schools have the capability of making a safer environment, referencing schools in Poland.

Reflect:

This source was very vital to me because I was introduced to a new idea: That violence in schools is a lot less common that it seems. It also just bluntly gave me some more information on the topic. With this new perspective, my audience or readers might become more engaged due to the lack of repetitiveness.

SIRS Researcher: "Gun Violence Is Rising in Schools, but Overall Crime Is Down"

Summarize:

This article compares some statistics from present day to years before, showing that while school shootings have increased in "popularity", bullying and other in school issues have decreased in frequency.

Assess:

This article was a surprise considering the topics of other similar articles, making it super useful. Compared to others, this article contrasts the common focus of just school shootings and instead the relationship between shooting rates going up, and bullying rates going down.

This article was quite reliable. It comes from a reputable source, "USA Today", which is a news resource that has lots of knowledge when it comes to relevant issues in the world. Additionally, the writer commonly takes quotes in this paper rather than only including her words.

Reflect:

This paper was of utmost importance to my research on the topic. It provided me with new knowledge on the subject, i.e. the relationship between bullying rates and shooting rates and what that relationship means. The viewers of my Padlet may take this information as well, because I know I thought it was very interesting.

SIRS Researcher: "Is the National Guard a Solution to School Violence?"

Summarize:

Rather than identifying issues and ways that they interact with schools, this article prefers to highlight a specific solution that some schools have tried: Putting the armed forces to work in schools.

Assess:

This paper was very, very helpful. I did not have an article about solutions before I read this one - so this was good. It differs from the others in this way, as well. It is great to have unique articles.

The reliability of this article is great. It mainly focuses on real-world examples of the solution, meaning that it could not be biased or opinionated to an altering extent.

The goal of this article was clear: Identifying a solution to school violence that some schools have been using and also identifying the problems with it.

Reflect:

As I've already mentioned, this article was beneficial to my Padlet, because I did not have one about solutions before reading it. With a solution, my presentation will be more defined, making readers more inclined to like my work.

The Reflection

If people remain indifferent to this topic like they are today, the frequency of violence in schools will only rise. And, unfortunately, many casualties would result from this. However, one of my chosen articles presents a solution: Enforcing peace with the Armed Forces. But, the same article also goes into detail about how this solution does not work out. So my choice for solution is mandating metal detectors in all school entrances.

There are many schools in America already doing this, and I agree with their idea. Using metal detectors, you could see if any students are carrying illegal items in their bags, and stop a violent act before it happens.
