Telemedicine as an innovation is not completely new. It has been around in some form for many years. It was initially developed in the 1960s for entities such as NASA. There was a need to put patients and medical professionals together where there is no way to meet face to space. (Pun intended.) This need was also felt in rural areas with little to no resources or access to routine medical care.

So what is so innovative now? The issue now is that telemedicine is becoming much more widespread and available to the masses. No longer does a person have to take a day off work, drive 30 miles, and sit 2 hours in a waiting room to get medicine for their UTI. They can go to work and have a doctor's visit on their lunch break. The prescription will be called into the pharmacy and waiting for her when she gets off work. This saves her time and money. For people with chronic conditions requiring medication and routine doctor visits this service can be a tremendous cost saver. It can also be used to have those living with limited access to healthcare. Telemedicine can also be expanded by utilizing various devices that can monitor vital signs and send directly to doctor. Of course this works great for minor conditions and chronic illness but initial diagnosis and more serious conditions would still require a visit to the brick and mortar location.

Previously there was not enough infrastructure to support telemedicine as it is today. High speed internet, video monitors, electronic health records and other technologies were needed to support this advancement. This was very costly. There was also licensing and credentialing issues for the doctors. Insurance reimbursement was also a problem. Most businesses would not have the capital to support these upgrades and if they did would it be financially beneficial to them?

Telehealth is a broad topic encompassing several subjects. Under the telehealth umbrella is wearables, robotics, telemedicine, and other health technological advances. My focus will be telemedicine. Telemedicine is a new way for patients to experience face to face doctor encounters from the comfort of their home, jobs, cars, or any other place where there is internet and access to a video monitor. With this technology patients can sit in front of a doctor (virtually) and both can see each other. This service is available at any time of the day or night. So for minor conditions a patient can see a doctor at 2am in the comfort of their own home.

I have personally used this service for the flu. I was so miserably sick that the last thing I wanted to do was get dressed and go to the doctor's office in three days. I couldn't wait that long I needed relief. So I woke up around midnight searching for relief when I remembered Teladoc. I had a consultation in my living room around midnight and when the pharmacy opened the next morning my prescription was already there.I didn't even have to pay a copay for the visit. I would recommend this service to everyone. For those of us with very busy lives this is a truly life changing technology. Most doctor's offices are open Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm. This is usually the same times most people work so it makes it impossible to see a doctor without taking time off work. Telemedicine changes this problem and gives people more control over there lives and health.
