Hello Darkness, My Old Friend

I feel that this is a song that Conor might listen to. At this point in his life, Conor is constantly woebegone and inconsolable. He is very unhappy, for he feels his friend betrayed him, he loathes his grandmother, his father lives all the way in America, and his mother is dying from an almost incurable malady.

Mythological books

I’m sure that Conor would want to learn a lot about mythology, considering how he’s experienced the monster’s presence. Maybe Conor would want to go to the library, look for a book on mythology, and read. Maybe somewhere in these books, somebody has seen the same monster he has. Maybe Conor wants to learn more about mythology, so he could put together the pieces that make up the monster.

Let Her Go

“Let Her Go” by Passenger is a song that Conor could’ve listened to. It’s pretty much exactly how Conor feels at the end of the book when he let his mom go. “And by doing so, he could finally let her go”(205). This quote is an exact line in this song, and if Conor listens to this song, maybe his feelings could be soothed a little bit. He would know that others are going through things just like him, and that he’s not alone.

Conor loves video games, or at the very least, electronics. “‘You can’t leave a mess for even two seconds. And she’s only got internet out in her office and I’m not allowed in there’”(89). “There wasn’t even a television”(84). These two quotes show us that Conor appreciates technology and feels distressed when unable to use it. So, I am under the impression that a small portable video game console would be a thing Conor would love to have.

Star Wars is a very popular, fun movie that kind of takes you from the real world into theirs. Conor’s real life is messed up and kind of crazy right now. Maybe by watching Star Wars, it would help Conor release himself from all of his pain, suffering, and grief, and have a little fun.

Conor hates EastEnders. “She fell asleep five minutes into EastEnders. Conor hates the program but he made sure it recorded for her...”(28). But, Conor loves his mother so much that he is willing to do anything for her, whether he likes it or not. He wants to make sure his mom is comfortable and happy and enjoying herself, for he knows that she may not have much longer to live, though she tells Conor she does.

Private

Conor’s social media. What to think of that? Conor would probably have social media everywhere. I’m sure hope had plenty of friends and posts, and was very outgoing and pleasant to be around. But, once his mom fell ill, he hid himself. He didn’t have friends not just because they new his mother had cancer, but because he blocked them out of his life. After the incident, Conor shut down all of his social media. He made everything private, for he didn’t want more people to know about him and “how terrible he was”. He removed all friends from his profiles and deleted most posts. By doing this, he deleted himself from the outside world. He wouldn’t have to deal with people anymore. “‘Leave me alone,’ Conor said, pushing past her”(25). Conor is pushing people away, and not for the best reason. He is angry that he has nobody to be his friend, but when there’s somebody willing right in front of him, he pushes them away.

The monster has great effects on Connor. Because of the monster, Conor is where he is now. Without the monster, Conor would still be locked away, sad, and angry. Thanks to the monster, Conor was able to accept his mother’s death.
