         <description><![CDATA[<div>My understanding and general knowledge of geometry is extremely limited. Overall, I do not recall what I learned about geometry while I was in elementary school, so my initial response to this question will be vague. I look forward to returning to this discussion and assessing how my knowledge has expanded after moving through these next few modules.&nbsp;<br><br>Key Ideas:<br>- Ability to name shapes&nbsp;</div><div>- Knowledge of different angles</div><div>- Geometry vocabulary</div><div>- Similarities and differences between two shapes<br><br>To make up for my short list of key ideas, I have found a funny joke to share with you all.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Geometrical thinking is important to developing minds. Some key ideas that should be covered in the elementary grades are shape names, figure classifications, how to measure angles, parallel vs perpendicular lines, translations, transformations, and scaling. These skills and concepts make up the foundation of geometry. So much so that I was able to list them off of the top of my head, even though I have not taken geometry in almost seven years. The earlier we introduce geometry, the more spatial reasoning students will have long-term.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In the elementary grades, students learning geometry will focus on geometric vocabulary like plane, point, and line. It will also, in the early elementary grades, introduce shapes and patterns with shapes. There will be lessons on parallel and perpendicular lines and relationships between shapes. Geometry is often a fun subject because there are a number of crafts and activities that can be done to introduce and continue to teach about geometry. As the students get into the upper elementary grades they will learn about perimeter and area. Geometry, although simple in terms of dealing with shapes, encompasses a number of subjects that span across the grades that teach about all the ways that the shapes are made up. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In elementary (K-6) school, students should be learning shapes (both two dimensional and three dimensional), degrees, division of a shape, points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, perpendicular lines, parallel lines, symmetry, coordinate plane, and quadrilaterals. Not to mention the area, surface area, and volume. The only thing else that would be great in the schools is if this was not always the last module of math for the school year, meaning it gets crammed at the very end of the year, sometimes in the last week to two weeks of school, if taught at all.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In elementary school students will learn the basics of geometry. The basics include learning about 2D and 3D shapes and what their properties are. They will also get into learning about the different angles that make up those shapes and what those angles mean in the older elementary grades. They also learn different vocabulary words to describe those shapes and angles. Some of those include parallel, point, line, perpendicular, degree, quadrilateral, ray, measurement, translation, transformations and many others. In fifth grade students even get into learning about surface area and volume. It is critical that we introduce geometric thinking at a young age because it can be difficult for many students to grasp so it is important that we introduce it early on.<br>- Ashley Webb</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In elementary grades, students will learn to identify and organize 2D and 3D shapes. In the image above students must create a triangle out of other shapes. I remember completing an activity like this when I was in grade school. Moving on, students will learn basic geometric vocabulary. Grades K-2 may be introduced to simple angle measurements like 90 degree and 180 degree angles.  Grades 3-6 will learn the different types of angles, how to solve the missing variant and the different types of lines. I am excited to learn more about what all geometry entails throughout this module!</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><em>What are the key ideas for geometry that should be covered in the elementary grades? In elementary school, students will learn the basic idea of geometry. When I think of geometry, the first thing that comes to mind is shapes. Students begin to work with shapes at a young age. Their understanding of shapes will become more complex&nbsp;as they get older. I imagine that older students would learn about angles and their properties. Also, older grades might begin to learn about volume and area. This is my guess about what would be covered in elementary school. I look forward to learn about much more!</em></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In elementary school studetnts start learning about geometry as early as Kindergarten as students are learning about 2D and 3D shapes. Although they are mostly&nbsp;learning to identify shapes this is only deepening their understanding of how these shapes are important to math. As students get older they start learning how to compose shapes and what shapes go together to create other ones. Students start to learn about angles,lines, segments, and rays. These will only help students when they move on to more complex math concepts.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The first thought I have on what should be covered in Geometry is shapes and their properties. This should include learning geometric terms and meanings such as angles, segments, lines, circumference, diameter, perimeter, etc. Elementary school students should begin to be exposed to diagrams and how to study them since this is something that they will need throughout the rest of their school years and on into college. An introduction to some of the simpler formulas would also be beneficial in the early elementary school grades and done in such a way as to not overwhelm the elementary school student.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In elementary school, students should start learning about geometry in Kindergarten.&nbsp; I remember learning about geometry throughout elementary school by utilizing various hands-on manipulatives. I think this is a teaching method that should be incorporated into all grade levels. In lower grades, they are beginning to identify shapes (2D) and learn the attributes of those shapes. Along with the key concept of identifying (naming) and recognizing shapes by their attributes (sides, points, etc.) I think another concept should be connecting shapes to the real world. Recognizing that a clock is a circle or the door is a rectangle. As students enter upper elementary grades, they start to learn about 3D shapes and can compare/contrast 2D from 3D. In upper elementary, I think a key concept is learning about the angles the shapes produce as well as the faces, vertices, and if they are symmetrical or not. I also think students begin to learn about finding the area and perimeter of these shapes whether they are irregular or not. Throughout elementary school I think the number one concept that needs to be taught is geometric terms and vocabulary so as students continue to learn and grow in this subject, they use consistent vocabulary and understand what is being taught.<br><br>-Kasey Genthe</div>]]></description>
