Disappointing past track record

The roles of men and women in society have always been considered "different". These stereotyped roles were present even in the education of each gender, the girls were educated to do all the housework and care for the family, while the boys did the technical and "heavy" work. 
For many years women had no voice. In many countries women were not able to work outside the home, obtain a driving license or even travel abroad without the authorization of their husband or father. For example, in Portugal, women were not allowed to marry a man who was paid less than hers. 
Fortunately, this whole situation is changing.

Courageous Women

Over time, several women have tackled gender inequalities. For example, the suffragette movement, Sojourner Truth,Susan B. Anthony,  Frida Kahlo, Sally Ride or Malala Yousafzai. All of these women fought against the same cause and made a difference.
And it was in order to establish gender equality that feminism was born. Feminism is a range of social and political movements, and
ideologies, that aim to define, establish and achieve the political, economical, personal and social equality of the sexes.

Will the future be gender equal?
The most important factor in a country’s competitiveness is its human talent – the skills and productivity of its workforce. It is the same for a company or an organization. That’s why the proper participation of half the world’s population is so important for the well-being of both businesses and countries.

More women than men are now enrolled in university in the majority of countries covered by the Global Gender Gap Report. Only four countries in the world – Philippines, Colombia, Fiji and Ghana – have more women than men in senior roles in the workplace.

As women get ahead at work they seek better representation in politics. Female politicians serve as role models and support policies that help people balancing formal work and informal care roles.

It is clear that achieving gender parity requires an
understanding of a very complex interplay of factors that affect rights and opportunities for women. There has been a significant increase in awareness of the importance of gender parity and much has been done by international organizations, civil society, governments and businesses.

Do gender inequalities still exist?
In many countries, women are still not allowed to own property and their signatures are invalid on legal documents if unaccompanied by the signature of a man.

Women still face inadequate representation politically, and in many regions, it is hard for women to come by legal help. It is important to understand that differences between the two sexes are not a basis for holding one on a pedestal and trampling on the other. Men and women are both human, and deserve the same treatment in the same circumstance.
