2000 Bush vs. Gore

The 2000 presidential election was the first in 112 years in which a president lost the popular vote but captured enough states to win the electoral vote. The closeness of the election required a recount in several Florida counties due to their state laws. (In addition, there was a lot of confusion in the design of the ballots.) However, the Supreme Court majority identified constitutional problems in the recount proceedings ordered by the Florida Supreme Court, decided to end all recount attempts after all. Some US citizens felt this did immeasurable damage to the equal protection rights the court claimed to be guarding, since it favored a convenient and timely processing of ballots over an accurate recording of the vote.

On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Over 3,000 people were killed.The attacks resulted in extensive death and destruction, triggering major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defining the presidency of George W. Bush.

What was your view on the Economy?

"In 2000, I was 24 and had moved to LA. became a public school teacher. The fact the country had economic problems, it was positive for me--I was able to afford a house because the prices were so low. However, it was harder to work in schools because cause they had to cut funding and teachers started getting laid off. The public school system also attempted to close all their libraries."

Did you feel like it would get better?

"Yeah, but it has been a very slow process. In 2009, when Obama was elected, this dramatic change in leadership brought hope to most people.

How did 9/11 affect you?

"It made me more aware of how limiting fear can be... made me think about how tragic we are when we reacted in fear, we brought ten or more years of consequences of that fear silly things like taking off our shoes at the airport...always worried about attacks and less trusting .... people are less open to parts of the world made the american point of view shift changed the way the country views the world"

What did you feel about the patriot act?

"I don't like it cause I feel it's part of the paranoia ...we value our national security more than our civil liberties and these are indispensable parts of being american....
America is dependent on protecting people's civil liberties."

What did you feel about Enron scandal? Larger companies?
"I think we in many ways are a society that is ruled by those who have a lot of money... sadly, a lot of those people are allowed to take advantage of others....Enron scandal and wrongdoings are a result of a real abuse of power"

Hurricane Katrina?

"I have read 20 books on it! I have family over there and the event determined fate with my husband!.... I was very distraught at the lack of help also because I knew people who were there.

Why do you think there was a lack of help?

"it's hard to say, typical answer would be because it is a poor city...not treated as equal"

Did you feel more or less patriotic after these events?

"after 911, I questioned whether or not the war was a good idea... a lot of people protested about the war ... personally, it made me more patriotic....advocating peace is very patriotic because of the protecting feeling towards america however, people were accused of not being patriotic"

2005 Hurricane Katrina

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast of the United States. It brought sustained winds of 100–140 miles per hour–and stretched some 400 miles across. The storm itself did a great deal of damage, but its aftermath was catastrophic. Levee breaches led to massive flooding, and many people charged that the federal government was slow to meet the needs of the people affected by the storm. Hundreds of thousands of people in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama were displaced from their homes, and experts estimate that Katrina caused more than $100 billion in damage.

What was it?

The United States housing bubble is an economic bubble affecting many parts of the United States housing market in over half of American states. Housing prices peaked in early 2006, started to decline in 2006 and 2007, and reached new lows in 2012. On December 30, 2008 the Case-Shiller home price index reported its largest price drop in its history. The credit crisis resulting from the bursting of the housing bubble is — according to general consensus — the primary cause of the 2007–2009 recession in the United States.

How did this happen?

Rising home prices led to rampant real estate speculation, and also fueled excessive consumer spending as people began to view their homes as a "piggy bank" that they could extract cash from to fuel discretionary purchases. As home prices soared and many homeowners "stretched" to make their mortgage payments, the possibility of a collapse grew.

Its goals are to strengthen domestic security and broaden the powers of law-enforcement agencies with regards to identifying and stopping terrorists. Critics counter the act gives the government too much power, threatens civil liberties and undermines the very democracy it seeks to protect. The Patriot Act has come under fire for a number of reasons. It was passed very quickly (just over a month after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks), and Congress spent very little time reading and debating it. By some accounts, less than 48 hours passed between the presentation of the bill’s final wording and the law passing in both houses of Congress, leading to some doubt whether many members of Congress actually read the lengthy and complex bill.
