our assignment was to pick any one item to photograph in a series of different types of lighting. i chose a mason jar because i had one handy and i like the way glass reflects light. i also chose to make my photos black and white so you can better recognize the values and contrast

Ten (11) Favorite Shots

Yes, i was supposed to pick ten. Yes, i submitted eleven. At that point in time, these were my favorite pictures i had taken. They were all taken summer of 2014. Some are from my trip to NYC in June, some taken during my family vacation in August, and some back around the time of Shepard Fairey's "Power and Glory" exhibit in July. I think I have grown a lot more as a photographer in the short period of time I have been taking my Photography class, but at one point this was my best work. I can't wait to see my best at the end of this school year to see how much I've improved. (Instead of uploading all eleven, I'm putting five of them up here)

Gay Marriage//mixed media project

Out of all the work I made at Rollings Middle School, this is one I think I am most proud of. This piece is in support of the legalization of Gay Marriage throughout the United States. I had set plans for how I planned for it to turn out, but as I got started it slowly became something completely different than what I had sketched out. The first layer is a collage of all of the flags of states that do not support gay marriage (of course it is different now) held down by a matte medium, sanded down to give it a more tattered and less clean cut look. On top of that I wrote out some quotes on the topic of gay marriage/gay rights which it hard to see unless you're looking at it in person, because the camera can't pick them up. Next I painted the famous palmetto tree and cresent moon of our own SC state flag. On top of the tree is written out in black "Love is patient, love is kind" over and over. On other side of the tree I created a spray paint stencil of two recognizable symbols for men holding hands on one side, and a man and a woman holding hands on the other. Each are surrounded by a heart. On top of the tree between the two hearts is an equal sign (=) painted on in the colors yellow and blue, like the equality flag. I put a lot of thought and heart into this piece, and it was one of my favorite projects I have ever done, maybe even my most favorite. I'm always happy to show it off to people unlike other things I have done that I get shy about. Despite some flaws in it, I am really proud of it, especially considering it was my first time using some of those materials. I plan to do other mixed media political posters in the future, and already have some ideas drawn out.
