  • Peru is a section of South America which is home to the amazon rain forest. 
  • Three-quarters of the world’s alpaca population lives in Peru ( An alpaca is like a llama).
  • The highest sand dune in the world, Cerro Blanco, can be found in Peru. It is located in the Sechura Desert and stands 3,860 feet from base to summit.
  • The deepest canyon in the world, Cotahuasi Canyon, is also found in Peru. At 11,004 feet deep, it is almost twice as deep as the Grand Canyon.
  • The colors are meant to symbolize the Incan people and their impact on Peru. The colors were chosen by The Liberator, Jose de San Martin.
  • The tallest mountain in Peru is called Huascaran, at the elevation of 22,205 feet.

Spanish Conquistador Francisco Pizarro conquered the Incas and captured Cuzco in 1533. The Spanish soon discovered gold and silver in the Andes Mountains and Peru became a great source of Spanish wealth and power.
    In 1533 Francisco Pizarro, a Spanish conquistador,colonized Peru in order to gain power and westernize the country, changing the dynamics of the land completely. Peru was left decimated, as the Spanish bought diseases with them, killing over 90% of the Inca population.  
    José de San Martín and his forces liberated Peru and proclaimed its independence from Spain on 28 July 1821. The two leading figures of the South American wars of independence were Simon Bolivar in the north and José de San Martín in the south.
