Yuri Gagarin's Background & Motivations

From a young age, Yuri Gagarin had a fascination with space and planets. He was interested and skilled in math and physics and went on to train as a technician. Then he went to an industrial school, where aircraft became a big interest for him. After graduating, Gagarin had the dream of going into space. His trainers considered him a top achiever during his training as a cosmonaut. I believe Gagarin's causes for exploration were positive because he had a very strong curiosity that gave him the ambition to make it to the moon, and the flight to space was a very positive thing for the world. When Yuri Gagarin went into space, he wasn’t sure what to expect- it was more of a matter of him coming back from the trip. It wasn’t necessarily about exploring a new territory as much as it was about stepping foot in it(not literally). The whole world waited to see if Gagarin would come back alive-which he did in a parachute.

The points of view between the US and the Soviet Union are different, mostly because the reactions to Gagarin’s exploration were affected by the Cold War. A lot of tension was existing between the US and the Soviet Union, and Gagarin’s trip into space caused the space race. The US and Soviet Union had been constantly trying to beat each other out by threatening each other with weapons and missiles, which became the arms race. When Gagarin became the first man in space, it was an upset to the US because the US had been planning their first space launch just a month after Gagarin’s happened in April 1961. Gagarin’s launch into space started the US and Soviet Union’s tension and competition in space.

Why is the article in the Daily Worker titled, "A Communist in Space"? Why did it matter to Americans that the first man in space was a communist? Why was it important that he was from the country that was the enemy of the US at the time? Because this launch by the Soviet Union had scored them a big point in their race against the US, and the US would have to worry about a lot more in order to even the score.

The statue is of Gagarin and is located in Moscow, Russia. When he landed, the Soviets were overjoyed that a man had made it to space, and that he had been from their country. They made him their hero. A crater on the moon was even named after him when a man was able to make it to the moon some time later. This statue really shows how much the Soviets honor Gagarin and how important he is to their country and to history. The Soviet’s perspective is one of celebration and pride.

Besides starting the space race, Yuri Gagarin’s launch into space was the first leap into space exploration as a whole. About a decade later after Gagarin’s launch, scientists were able to construct Saturn V so that it could reach escape velocity and fully leave Earth’s atmosphere. Saturn V then resulted in Neil Armstrong stepping foot on the moon in 1969, as well as more Apollo missions. Another thing that has improved after Gagarin’s exploration is the comfort of spacecrafts- when Gagarin was flying, it was only about 100 minutes. For long-term missions, aircrafts have been developing “luxuries” like better food, more space, and even maybe an exercise bike. The most remarkable thing that has changed as a result of the first space exploration is just how routine space exploration has become- the technology is better, the resources and knowledge are better, and there is even talk of going to Mars today: all thanks to the first man who went into space, Yuri Gagarin.

Some explorers stay where the explored because they found new land that they could colonize, rule, and gain wealth from. Some explorers colonize to gain power and control over a territory, as well as gain more wealth and influence. Others don’t because of financial reasons, however, most explorers do. Explorers accomplished gaining new territories, making new discoveries, gaining more wealth, and changing the ways people live. My explorer didn’t claim anything, he just claimed the title of the first man in space and brought a lot of honor to the Soviet Union. Countries colonize to exploit new land its resources, helping them gain more power and prestige. It could also be to change the ways indigenous people live, or “civilize” them. A reason that a country wouldn’t colonize is for financial reasons- some countries don’t have enough wealth to build civilization or send troops to new land. People moved to new colonies for religious and political freedom, and more economic opportunity. They also would get a chance to trade things from other cultures that they wouldn’t have been able to before.

As a result of colonization, a lot of native populations became victim to slavery, Native Americans were forced to convert to Christianity, and a lot of violence came with the conquering the countries did. Many died.

Explorers killed natives who wouldn’t convert to Christianity and forced the ones still alive to change the ways they live and what they believe, all in the name of God. To me, this looks like European countries had a superior outlook on themselves compared to other countries, and literally took lives to prove that they were right. I think religion was being used as an excuse to assert power over other countries and kill people. It was unnecessary, but unfortunately wiped out a lot of culture and religions. This has changed modern day because many more people are Christian, but I can't see this motivation as a positive thing.

Gold seems to be the most practical reason for expansion and exploration- a lot of countries needed to find trade routes to other countries to gain more wealth and resources. However, a lot of these countries didn’t need more wealth, and many natives suffered so countries could get richer. It is a positive effect that culture spread to different parts of the world from trading and exploration, but a lot of native culture was wiped. So- this one seems to be a 50/50 for positive and negative.

Glory is the third condition for human expansion, and the most unnecessary. Glory is another word for countries trying to show off to each other, and for explorers trying to prove their worth to their kings. But what if kindness was used instead of wanting glory for oneself during these times? Wouldn't we all be in a better place? Therefore, this motivation is a big fat negative.
