Traditionally, Americans perform the white wedding type, where the bride wears a white dress, but this also includes the entire wedding routine. Back then, in the early ages of the U.S, marriage was very different from what it was today, Marriage was not always influenced by love, and factors like economical status, religion, race and segregation determined the outcome of many marriages. An example would be that a white person couldn’t marry a black person, or that gay marriage was forbidden back then. The traditional meaning is: “The legally recognized union of two people as partners in a relationship, specifically a union between a man and a woman, which lasts until death”.

Around 88% of the population believe love is a very important reason for marriage, while a 23% believe that legal rights and benefits is an important reason for marriage.

In 2017, the median age for marriage was about 29.5 years for men and 27.4 years for women, the highest it’s ever been. The divorce rate is also the high as 50% of married couples eventually end up in divorce before a spouse dies. Today, only 51% of adults are married, a drop from the 72% back in 1960. Now marriage doesn’t always have to be between a man and a woman, and now there are more same sex marriages than ever before, since it’s legalization.

In America, when you meet someone new or greet someone new, it is different from other countries or places like south america. In America, the handshake is the most common form of a greeting. When meeting someone, you can say “Hi, how are you?” Which is a good way of verbally greeting someone, but your body language matters too. A handshake is for meeting strangers, with friends it can be something like a fist bump or man hug, or other type of customized hand greeting. For couples it can be a kiss on the cheek/mouth, it depends on the formality and relationship with the person.
