Martin Luther King Jr was a social activist in the mid 1950’s, named after German monk Martin Luther, known for his role in the American civil rights movement who fought for equality for all victims of injustice through non-violent resistance until his assassination in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968. Kings leadership skills became one of the main reasons of his movements successes, which included the outlawing of racial segregation on interstate transport by the supreme court in 1961. These successes would ultimately lead to a higher acceptance of racial equality in not only the United States but around the world. Nowadays he is known as a “truly radical change agent” worldwide due to his movements which changed the way that people saw the world and also held great significance in promoting not only racial equality but human dignity. His peaceful but powerful acts would later inspire other minority group, such as women, the LGBTQ community and other minority groups around the world to protest in the same style that he did in the years to come.

Kings ideas and mindset inspired people around the world to accept and acknowledge that all people were born equal and should live in peace. The way the he was able to challenge the idea that racial segregation was the way things should operate around the world was through his peaceful and non-violent methods of protests, such as giving speeches and starting marches, which were inspired by Mahatma Ghandi. At the time most people, mainly white Americans, disagreed with King on an extreme level, making him a target to those who believed that only white people deserved to be treated fairly.. In 1964 he was not only arrested but he also had his own home bombed, however this didn’t stop him from fighting. Despite clearly having his life at risk from those who opposed him he continued to fight for racial equality. His ideas separated people around the world with some supporting him and others, such as the Ku Klux Klan and just racist people in general, argued against him. King would continue to push for his ideas until his assassination in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968.

Martin Luther King Jr lived his adult life in a time where people of color not only in America but worldwide were discriminated and disliked by most if not all white people. Colored people who lived in America during these times, most notably the African-American community, lived tough lives with harsh punishment. African-Americans were victims to many discriminatory acts, such as racial segregation on public transport and being denied the same privileges that white Americans would be granted such as voting in elections. The situation was like this in America at the time simply because white people hated black people and thought that it was right for them to not be recognized as Human beings and to not be treated with the same respect they would give each other because of their skin colour. Martin Luther King Jr was obviously strongly against this as were other African americans. Being the son of a Baptist church minister and being a church minister himself, King had certain beliefs and ideas which guided him throughout those tough times. He believed in courage and that if you had nothing you would die for, then you also had nothing to live for. He also strongly believed in love and respect for all, human dignity, injustice’s anywhere were injustice’s every where and that everything would one be day be right because the universe was founded upon justice.

What I found most inspiring about Martin Luther King Jr was that despite being a member of a minority who was yet to earn proper respect and credit to his name, he became a key element in the success and the progression of the 1950’s civil rights movement. Although he had almost no power when compared to white americans in society like most other African americans at the time, he still continued to fight for equality for African americans, the disadvantaged and all other victims of discrimination and injustice around the world. Martin Luther King Jr was able to go from being a pastor to playing an important role in the Montgomery bus boycott and also the civil rights and voting rights acts in America. I also appreciate the fact that he was willing to put his life at risk for the sake of what he believed should be right in society. King’s life was threatened by many white supremacists but he still continued to fight for his and others’ rights in society. Not only did Martin Luther King fight for racial equality and an end to segregation laws, but he also mostly succeeded in it. His major and historic success resulted in the 1964 civil rights act banning public segregation and racial discrimination during employment processes.
