Arithmetic density enables geographers to compare the number of people living in different regions of the world. It is calculated by dividing the total number of people by the total land area. If the number is high, it means that people are clustered together; if the number is low it means that people are dispersed throughout society.

Agricultural Density is the ratio of the number of farmers to the amount of arable land. More developed countries have way lower agricultural densities, this is because technology & finance allow a very small amount of people to farm extensive areas (land) and feed a lot of people. Agricultural density also helps account for economic differences between countries.

The ecumene is the portion of Earth's surface occupied by permanent human settlement and used for agricultural and economic purposes. The ecumene has increased, while the areas on Earth that are considered too harsh to live in have diminished. However, about 75 percent of the population of the world live on 5 percent of the Earth's surface; less than 30 percent of the Earth's surface is land area, but not all of the land is habitable.
