Amal Anoohi, Associate AIA
Amal graduated from The University of Arizona with a 5-year accredited Bachelor of Architecture degree in 2019. She is a recipient of the AIA Henry Adams Medal and Certificate of Merit, The King Student Medal Award for Excellence in Architecture + Environmental Research, and The Capstone award for her achievements throughout her undergraduate studies. She has served on the AIA Arizona State Conference Committee for two years, and is currently an Associate member for the AIA Arizona Chapter. Amal was a former Architectural designer at Bohlin Cywinski Jackson in Seattle, before moving back to her hometown in Dubai, UAE where she currently works and resides.

David Kim, graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Architecture in 2014. At the U of A, he is a recipient of the Outstanding Senior Award, ARCC King Student Medal, Architectural & Environmental Design Research Award, and the Capstone Award. After working in the profession, he received his Master in Architecture with Distinction at Harvard University, Graduate School of Design in 2020. There he received the Kevin V. Kieran Prize for the highest level of academic achievement among students graduating from the post-professional program. He was a former job captain at Michael Maltzan Architecture for four years and currently working in Los Angeles.

The jurors unanimously felt Design Portfolio #4 stood out among all entries submitted because it has the overall best presentation and project execution while displaying a sense of maturity, personal style, excellent creative expression, and an assertive attitude towards design principles throughout. #4 is like a good book: the desire to read it grows as we scroll through the pages without words, but beautiful drawings as the story of one's experiences and professional skills are well done. The graphic and representation skills are excellent and reveal the essence of each project. Overall portfolio layout and presentation are articulately displayed. Starting with the beautiful cover that makes an excellent first impression, it proceeds with early projects interested in the phenomenological approach to research into the experience of the built space. This follows through the work as it progresses into the fourth-year projects, according to a coherence of design skills that turns out to be highly personal. The simple but powerful structure of a few pages with short captions centers on the primary purpose: to create a brief image of one's personality and abilities in analog and digital drawing, sketching, modeling, painting. The body of work focuses on form, proportion, materiality, and light to convey the candidate's design voice. In conclusion, the jury awards this portfolio honor award for the candidate's design coherence who does not fall into the trap of presenting every single project carried out at all costs, from the first year of architecture school to the last sketch. The jury recognizes the excellent display of graphics and representation of Patagonia Children Center's project and its overall portfolio. Some cleverly disseminated phrases hint at the author's will to give a character to the intervention dominated by a general understatement: politics and programs can be the backbone for creating a flexible space. The format and presentation quality are compelling and well organized by using typography and graphic content to convey a personal voice and portray a story. On the one hand, the jury appreciates the project's strength in the design's essentiality and the relationship between the changing space and the seasons that weave a close, balanced and harmonious dialogue between space and time.
