A great way to build relationships between teachers, parents, and students is sending a positive email to each family. Some families never get a positive email and may be bitter when there is a disciplinary problem. You can keep track of the positive emails on your grade book. 

2. Communicating with parents can be a little tricky. My black-and-white brain has come up with a formula to help when sending an email that may not be taken well. 

Positive Comment + Concern (not overly negative) + Question about how the teacher can help

I find that the personal question about how the teacher can help the individual student helps the parent feel like they are a part of the team. An example questions can include: 
- What have teachers done in the past that has been successful? 
- What strategies do you use at home when you see this behavior? 
- How can I help your student feel comfortable in my classroom? 

3. Updating the parents is the best bet to have family buy-in with student success. The EWA community is huge. Students live in all different places and have a variety of interests. The best way that I've found to incorporate the school/community is to have guest speakers or classroom helpers. I've had a scientist from NC State come to my class which brings a great connection to colleges in our area. I've also had parent volunteers in my class. This was helpful because the parent knew the students on a personal level and was able to help with classroom management. 

2. I love going to student sport events. My team and I tend to go to one game for each sport so parents and students can see our support.
