This week in library lessons our Pre-K and Kindergarten students learned about ducks! We talked about ducks being something that Mrs. Donley wanted to learn more about. When she wanted to learn more about something, she went to the library! That’s the purpose of a library - to find information on a topic. We learned about ducks by watching a video, singing a song, and reading books. By doing all those things, we researched ducks.

With 2nd grade students this week, we used an app called Pebblego. Students were taught how to find Pebblego through their My Katy Cloud also, but we used the class set of iPads. They were shown the 4 databases in which to do research and got to explore them independently. Then, we did a scavenger hunt! Students answered questions about penguins, geckos, even The Cat in the Hat! It was really fun, and I learned how competitive a scavenger hunt can be! :)

Here at the beginning of the year it is always a good time to teach patrons how to find books! As the librarian I am always here to help, but I want students to become independent users of the library. It's a library standard for students to have inquiry learning - they find what they want to read about what they want to know more about. Having our library catalog available makes their search much easier.

Shadow Weaver is the first book I am reading from next year's Texas Bluebonnet reading list! The list looks REALLY good! Shadow Weaver is a book about Emmaline, a young girl who can see and move shadows, including her own. She uses them to hide herself and other things. Although this gets her in trouble now and again, it turns out to be a valuable talent that others want to steal. This story is a story of friendship and has a thrilling plot line. Highly recommend.

Wishtree is my second Texas Bluebonnet book for next year. Katherine Applegate is one of my favorite authors, so I was so excited to see her name on the list. Wishtree did not disappoint! The story is narrated by a tree, a red oak who tells a lot about tree and animal history. The community of animals and the tree are kind of like a family - actually, exactly like a family. Every year, May 1st is wishing day. The wishtree becomes covered with everyone's wishes on different forms of paper, fabric, etc. But the story isn't about that. It's about family and acceptance. Read to find out more. Highly recommend.

When a Houston area school cancelled their visit with THE Ginger Zee, I couldn't help but put our school in the running to host her - and we succeeded! Ginger Zee, chief meteorologist for ABC News, now children's book author will be visiting with our 4th and 5th graders on Thursday, April 25th. She has written a trilogy that combines her passion of weather with writing. Chasing Helicity is about a girl named Helicity who has seen mass destruction in her small town from a tornado. This causes her love and fascination with meteorology to grow. With every change in the weather, I couldn't put it down - very thrilling!

Her passion for writing about different cultures and race for this generation of young people is evident in Harbor Me.
