Faced with the harshness of war she still shows her humanity through it all. Freddie explains the conflicting feelings of human nature as she takes a life to save many lives. It is in her instincts to help him back up and aid him but it is in her logic that tells her to shoot them in the first place for the deeds of evil they have committed. She deals with the trauma of these events later on in her life and later speaks about it in the interviews as well.

Schaft compares herself to the Nazis and highlights the nobility of the resistance in contrast to the evil of the Nazis. Even though the resistance would murder Nazis, she points out that they would never do the same atrocities that they had done. She makes this point to illustrate that their actions were motivated by a just cause, while the Hitleritres (Nazis) were heartless and brutal.

Before the war had started, the two sisters would hide Jewish people in their homes, which was their first act of resistance against the Nazis. As the war had begun, all three girls met at the Resistance Council after deciding they wanted to make an impact, where they joined forces to work together. After being recruited by the Dutch Resistance, they bomb bridges and sabotage railways. Their primary mission, however, involved luring men from bars into the woods, where they would shoot and kill them. The Dutch Resistance recruited them because they were innocent and unsuspecting, making them unlikely suspects. Many Nazis would trust the girls, and they would successfully seduce them to their death.

On April 17, 1945, Hannie Schaft was shot and killed by a Nazi. She had been discovered riding her bike with resistance papers in her bag and a gun. However, she was not killed immediately. She was arrested when found and imprisoned in Amsterdam. A month after her arrest, two Nazi officers are walking behind her, forcing her to walk forward in the sandy dunes. One of the guards attempts to shoot Schaft in the back of the head but missed. It is said that her last words were "I'm a better shot," implying that she was a better marksman than the guard.
