         <description><![CDATA[<div>November 8,1960</div><ul><li>Democratic candidate John F. Kennedy defeated the Republican candidate  Richard Nixon in a closely contested election. </li><li>Kennedy won the election because of his well organized campaign.</li><li> He also benefited from the<br>first televised presidential election debates in the<br>nation’s history, in which he appeared forceful and<br>Nixon ill at ease.</li><li>He also won because of the African American vote.</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Foreign Affairs </div><ul><li>Kennedy approved the plan to send 1400 CIA trained Cuban exiles to Cuba this was called the Bay of Pigs.</li><li>The mission was to overthrow Fidel Castro, the communist leader of Cuba.</li><li>The mission was a huge failure which resulted in nearly all killed or captured. </li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Kennedy meets Khrushchev </div><ul><li>Kennedy met with soviet union leader Nikita Khrushchev in Vienna to discuss Berlin.</li><li>Kennedy thought that if he met with Khrushchev the two leaders could work out their differences.</li><li>The meeting didn't go well they had major differences to which neither men agreed on.</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Cuban Missile crisis </div><ul><li>After learning that the Soviet Union was constructing nuclear weapons and long rang missiles in Cuba.</li><li>Kennedy announced a naval blockade of Cuba because of threat to the U.S.</li><li>The standoff lasted for 2 weeks before Khrushchev agreed to dismantle  Soviet Union missile sites. </li><li>America had to agree not to invade the island and the removal of U.S. missiles from Turkey and other sites close to Soviet borders.</li></ul><div><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Kennedy won his greatest foreign affairs victory when Khrushchev agreed to join him and Britain’s Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in signing a nuclear test ban treaty.</li><li>After 12 days of negotiations  the two nations agreed to ban test firing in the atmosphere, outer space, and underwater.</li><li>Kennedy expressed that putting this ban in place  made a safer by far for the U.S.</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>The senate approved the limited Nuclear ban treaty on September 23,1963 by an 80-19 margin.</li><li>Kennedy signed the treaty on October 7,1963.</li><li>The treaty prohibited nuclear weapons tests or other nuclear explosions under water, in the atmosphere, or in outer space, allowed underground nuclear tests as long as no radioactive debris falls outside the boundaries of the nation conducting the test,pledged signatories to work towards complete disarmament, an end to the armaments race, and an end to the contamination of the environment by radioactive substances.</li></ul><div> </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Assassination of JFK</div><ul><li>JFK was assassinated November 22,1963 in Dallas,Texas  by Lee Harvey Oswald. </li><li>Millions were glued to their televisions over the next few days, watching live, in horror, as the president’s accused killer, Lee Harvey Oswald, was himself killed.</li><li>A Warren Commission investigation determined that Oswald acted alone.<br>However, many people continue to believe that<br>Oswald acted as part of a conspiracy.</li><li>Kennedy was a very beloved president and many thought he was one of the best he was also the youngest president elected and 35th president of the U.S.</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>
