From my perspective, the use of words is often neglected in class. In China, teachers are more likely to focus on teaching students the meaning and form of words. It's hard for me to remember particular words that have been a heavier burden than others but when it comes to "knowing a word or words", I can say finding the correct collocations and using an appropriate and consistent register have always been challenging. In the case of collocations, the reason is that as a learner, learning the "meaning" of a word always had priority over its use. As far as register is concerned, it's to do with the way & context in which I was taught English: reading & writing-focused, for academic purposes and entirely in an EFL context with virtually no contact with authentic materials (including speakers) and no use for it outside the classroom.
