I was told that I should act like everyone else otherwise it was inappropriate. I will be corrected until I did as adults told. The place where I grew up focuses on collectivism and everyone should see themselves as only a small part of a big machine, and you should do your part or functionated as a qualified part whereas act like what you want and jeopardizing the big machine. If everyone did what they have been told, so should you.

My environment thankfully was a very positive one the way I was disciplined was a positive impact on my development. The methods and strategies is something that I still use till this day. I was told to do what ever I want but within limits and was thankfully rightly guided.

I am very grateful that I had parents that did not believe in punishing my brother and I in abusive ways. Honestly, when I did something wrong my parents could bet that I would punish myself more than they ever could anyway (I have a lot of anxiety and hold myself to very high standards, so when I disappoint someone I can be very hard on myself, especially emotionally). Often, the way I was punished for something was for them to purposefully ignore me while my parents worked to get their own emotions and behaviours in check, which I found extremely hurtful. Now that I am an adult myself, I understand that they needed this time to self-regulate before they would allow themselves to interact with me, and I appreciate that they did this for everyone's benefit, but I don't think that this approach was ultimately helpful to me when I was growing up. The anxiety, guilt, and shame that I felt would make me sick, and I would often make things worse by trying to force a confrontation over and over again just to get it over with. I wish that my parents had explained that they weren't actually ignoring me, they just needed time to think about what happened and how they felt about it before we could come together to talk, but I'm not really sure that they even knew that that was what they were doing. Talking openly is something that we do now whenever we have a disagreement, and I think it is a much healthier and respectful approach.
