How does culture shape our identity?

I would like to postulate that culture IS our identity. Culture is the practices, the traditions, the heritage of our ancestors and those who have gone before us. Thus, it shapes our identity by forming a basis from which we define ourselves, whether we choose to break free from it or build on top of it.

Why is it important to document and preserve cultural elements?

In connection to my answer in the previous question, culture is the basis (or cornerstone) on which we build or base our identity. Thus, it is important to document and preserve cultural elements to lay down the foundation and leave a legacy for future generations, whether it be tangible or intangible.

Culture shapes our identity by giving a sense of community and acceptance to a person's heart and mind. Through culture, people can express themselves and meet others who share the same ideas and beliefs. It's also through culture that a person can learn all kinds of practices and traditions and embody their meanings and symbolism. When a person becomes part of a culture, they begin to live their life following the rules and norms of that culture, slowly shaping who they are as an individual.

It's important to preserve cultural elements as they are important to a person or community's history, ideology, social hierarchy, and identity. A culture's traditions and practices are meant to be passed down from generation to generation, forming a legacy of the contributions and impact that the ancestors had on society. Preserving and documenting the elements that build up a culture holds together the foundation of that culture so that it may continue to be passed down to future generations so that they may appreciate its history and representation.

Our culture is the basis of our identity. Everything we've ever known, want to know, and what we already see and learn are based on our cultural upbringing; however we interpret anything with our eyes is with the lens of our culture.

It is in our cultural elements that we'll really know who we really are, mainly because however it raised us will define us. Therefore, it needs to be preserved to look back on or to pass down through generations.
