Emperor Constantine and his son Constantine II had this Church built as they spreaded the now very popular religion of Christianity. This gave the Romans a place to worship in their daily lives. Unfortunately the Church you see now is not the same building. There was a tragic fire in 404 C.E. Then it was rebuilt a few years later in 415 C.E. That Church isn't this one either. Due to some problems with taxes on January 11th through 19th there was a huge revolt in 532 called the Nika revolt which led to yet another fire where the Church was burnt to the ground. Luckily Emperor Justinian rebuilt the Church to what is standing now. This reconstruction ended in 537 C.E. These wonderful mosaics depicting the Emperor and Empress, with Virgin Mary and Jesus are the only surviving mosaics of the time period.  Along with its mosaics the Hagia Sophia is made from a complex system of arches and semi domes supporting one huge dome with a diameter of over 101 feet. There also are four towers surrounding this Roman beauty.
