Slip-and-fall injuries are a leading cause of injury in the health care industry. Injuries can be reduced by doing the following:

1. Requiring all staff members to wear slip resistant shoes. This will help prevent employees from slipping on water, oil or soap.

2. If in a location where snow and ice could be present, keep all parking lots and sidewalks clear of these hazards to avoid employees from slipping and falling while entering or leaving work.

3. Keep floors dry and clear of clutter. Many facilities now utilize a industrial machine that not only washes the floors, but also dries it as well. However, it is still crucial for all employees to inspect for spilled liquids or locations that are not thoroughly die. If an area is wet and needs time to dry, place a caution sign out to make individuals aware of the area that is to be avoided to prevent an accident.

When working in the health care environment it is important to know how to properly assist a patient when lifting, moving or assisting a patient who is incapable of accomplishing such tasks on their own. The following will help prevent injuries when attempting such tasks:

1. Use Good Body Mechanics- maintain the back in a neutral position, this will help preserve its natural curves. Hinge from the hips to elevate putting pressure and strain on the back. When transferring patients, use a transfer board or the assistance of another individual.

2. Stay in Shape- studies show that those who main their weight, muscle strength and flexibility are less likely to get injured.

3. Wear Appropriate Shoes- Prolonged standing and walking on solid/hard floors creates pressure on the back. Decent shoes can help absorb some of the pressure.

4. Utilize Proper Technology- most places of employment now have the equipment to help employees remain safe from injuries to their bodies. Ceiling lifts, portable lifts, transfer technology and more are available to assist in moving a patient.
