This resource outlines the timeline and milestones for EDs, RFEs, and the MT to make adjustments to 2019 regional incoming corps size targets in-year. As a reminder, FY19 budgeted incoming corps size is the default starting point for each region’s 2019 corps allocation (and depending on enterprise considerations, we may or may not have flexibility to adjust in-year). FY19 Org Regional Development Progress Reviews

Three months into FY19, we’re making progress against our regional fundraising goals: with $104M committed to date, we have many wins to celebrate as we continue to the climb towards our collective TFA fundraising goal of $216M. To that end, this year we plan to take a new approach to Regional Development Progress Reviews, informed by your feedback and lessons from the past. Going forward, progress reviews will be an opportunity for the MT, RFEs, EDs and their teams, and national leaders to come together at the same table as they take stock of fundraising progress and challenges, assess risk, and collaborate on strategies and supports. More detail about FY19 progress reviews is available in the document linked above, and here are a few key headlines:

Basic logistics: We’ll hold progress reviews roughly every 6 weeks, in 3-4 hours sessions, during which we will discuss 8-12 regions.
Which regions: Regions with the largest enterprise impact or risk will engage in progress reviews the most regularly, while some regions may never participate in a formal progress review in this way (or do so with less frequency).
Data usage: We’ve learned that these conversations are most effective when they’re grounded in robust, accurate data. EDs are accountable for ensuring their region’s TFACT data is accurate at all points in the year, and particularly for progress reviews.

The first Regional Development Progress Review was held on September 14. Thank you to the Baltimore, Mass, Miami-Dade and Metro-Atlanta regions for participating! Tegan and/or Chavon will invite and work with EDs/HoDs in advance of the next devo progress review which will happen in November.

ENC: Collaboration with Charlotte-Piedmont Triad around statewide gift and potential new $250,000 matching donor. Metro Atlanta: Currently have asks out totaling $1M. Charlotte-Piedmont Triad: $100K Wells Fargo Championship gift that was a downgrade but higher than expected & $100K Piedmont Triad gift from VF Corp.
Alabama: Onboarding a 100% new development team and managing gift processing reconciliation. South Carolina: Hired new HOD- welcome Kristin! And are 98% to goal thanks to state gift. Orlando: Renewed the OCPS district contract. Rhode Island: Secured a secret "multi-year grant link" from a major foundation. Massachusetts: $500 upgraded multi-year gift from donor who had totally divested from education (except us). Jacksonville: Phone call from major donor family after invitation oversight led to a great stewardship conversation in preparation for an upgrade ask.

Announcing Our Quarter 3 Priorities (Dec. 1 - Feb. 28)

Our coaching and learning priorities for the Home Team will be focused on the following strategies:

- Moving Donors Through the Pipeline: Focus on implementing strategies and activities designed to move donors through the pipeline – especially those who we have not met with yet (still in pursue). Goal: 95% of weighted pipeline in convince by end of Q3.
- Accelerating the Pace of Secured Commitments: As we begin to make more asks, our goal will be to increase the pace in which commitments are secured. Goal: 90% of weighted pipeline in secured commitments by end of Q3, which will allow us to be laser focused on cash collection in Q4.

We have several ED updates to share happening across the home team:

After 5 years as the ED in Metro Atlanta, DeLano Ford will be transitioning out of his role on January 31 to be Executive in Residence at the Charter School Growth Fund.
Khadijah Abdullah will be transitioning into the ED role in Metro Atlanta as DeLano’s successor, and we will launch a search shortly for Khadijah’s successor in Alabama.
Given his new role and responsibilities as a Duval County Public School Board Member, Darryl Willie will be transitioning out of his ED role in Jacksonville as of February 15.
After a thorough search process, we’re introducing Tiana Tyeskey as the new Executive Director in Orlando starting in February.

We want to bring more RTAT talent into regions and other national teams. Historically, we have struggled to support talent flow between the RTAT and rest of the organization, as our hiring and promotion cycle happens early due to the seasonal nature of recruitment work. We anticipate more attrition than usual this year, and see an opportunity to strengthen all of TFA—rather than risk losing great people from the org—especially in roles that require deep internalization of the Foundations, strong written and verbal communication, portfolio/pipeline management, and data-driven decision-making.

Starting now and ongoing, as you get clear on FY20 openings on your team, please communicate any that you think are particularly good fits for RTAT talent to Darin Lim Yankowitz (VP, People & Performance for the RTAT). Our goal is to start dialogue early between EDs/VPs and RTAT folks—even while budgets are not yet approved—so that RTAT team members learn about these opportunities and can consider them in their FY20 decision-making.

In partnership with regions, the national TLD is seeking to design a resource to support regions connect the dots between our Theory of Leadership (TOL), great teaching, and broader student outcome. This resource will directly and concretely illustrate how developing systems change leadership also develops great teachers who have an impact in their classrooms. As you saw in today’s Mon Min, they’re asking folks to share their input into that resource by taking a short survey and asking coaches to express interest in joining a group of practitioners to design the actual resource. Thank you so much for your leadership during FY20 annual planning and budget process. This was one of our smoothest approval processes yet, and that is in large part thanks to you and your team’s hard work in putting together excellent budget proposals.

As of today (4/22), all Team Impact budgets have been conditionally approved by Susan!!

By the end of this week, we should receive word of the full Management Team’s approval of our budgets via an email from Susan to each ED. UNC Teacher Effectiveness Report

This week researchers from the UNC system shared their annual teacher portals effectiveness study, which includes TFA teachers from 2012-2017. The report found that TFA teachers are more diverse, more likely to hold a high-need license, and more likely to work in high-need schools. They also found that TFA teachers are more effective than UNC System teachers as measured by value-added estimates and administrator evaluation ratings. Finally, TFA teachers have the lowest retention rate after two years compared to all other traditionally and alternatively certified teachers in North Carolina. Learn more: OWLS research brief.

This is Team Impact’s best performance since FY15 and our first experiencing year-over-year growth. I'm so glad we were able to gather our EDs in Baltimore Sep 17-18. It was great to welcome Tiana (ORL), LaKeisha (JAC) and Mikisha (TWC) to our team and build community and tighter bonds. There is so much for us to celebrate across our 12 regions. The collective impact and results since becoming a home team in 2015 is certainly greater and more profound then the sum of our parts. As we begin to roll-out and align ourselves to TFA's next strategic direction, I'm feeling grateful for this team and excited about the next chapter in our work and learning as a home team. Regional leadership team members can read more about our home team's FY20 vision and strategy co-created and co-shaped with our EDs here. I'm feeling more on fire than ever before about the potential and opportunities before us to truly accelerate the pace of change and deepen our impact for communities and students so that we stay true to our commitment of realizing One Day. I look forward to picking back up post my 10 year+ sabbatical in October and grateful to have the space and time to step away so I can spend time with my family, rest and get rejuvenated for the next phase in our fight for educational equity and excellence together. Janna Wagner (NYC '95) was named this year's Peter Jennings Award for Civic Leadership winner! Janna leads as Co-Founder and Chief Learning Officer at All Our Kin, a non-profit that provides training, coaching, and licensure support for mothers of young children to run their own home-based child-care programs. In addition to providing working mothers with economic stability, the organization also helps increase the quality, availability, and sustainability of early education opportunities available to children in Connecticut and New York City. She is a featured speaker at Connecticut's upcoming annual benefit dinner on Wednesday, November 6 at the Stamford Marriott in Stamford, CT along with Kaya Henderson (NYC '92) former Chancellor of DC Public Schools. MASS and ENC were just 2% away from the breakthrough at 89%.
CT demonstrated the greatest Y2Y growth of any team in the org with a 23% increase!

After a collective 8 years at Teach For America, Heather Owen’s last day will be Friday, December 20. She is transitioning into a Director of Talent Strategy role with an external company. In an attempt to save your inbox, she isn’t planning to send a farewell email, but wanted to share the following (email, Instagram, organizing Instagram account), if you want to reach out. As you know, Heather has been my rock ever since stepping in as my Executive Assistant (twice). She’s become part of my family, and Shaylin and I can’t thank her enough for everything she has done to support us. Thank you to everyone who was able to contribute a note to Heather’s awesome box. I know you join me in celebrating the countless seen and unseen ways Heather has made a difference in our work and lives. While it will be quite an adjustment for me and difficult to not talk to her every day, I know she’s not going far and we’ll always leave the light on when she’s ready to come back home.

While we are sad to see Heather transition from her role, we are excited to introduce you to my new Executive Assistant, Denetria Thomas. Denetria brings nearly 15 years of administrative and executive support to the team. She is a Baltimore native and has extensive experience supporting local non-profits, hospitals, and universities. In FY20 we will expand alumni address and employment collection to cover all alumni and test new survey strategies through opt-in pilots. This is in response to overwhelming demand from regional teams for accurate alumni demographic/employment data, and emerging business needs from our new strategic direction. As a result, we will not require the collection of alumni NPS and CALI this year.

I had the pleasure and honor to attend RI's engagements with former national board chair, Steve Mandel, local donors and state officials including Gov. Gina Raimando. And last night, I attended the annual CT benefit dinner in Stamford, CT. Nearly 270 people were in attendance and over 650K (and counting!) was raised in support of TFA's work across CT. PJ Moment Design Lab

Program Partners and the OWLS Adult Learning team want to invite you to join us in trying a new structure for spreading relevant resources and tools and collectively working together to improve the Participant Journey across all of our regions---a Participant Journey Design Workshop. Our first PJ moment will be: Alumni Induction (making the transition from CM to alumni).

What it is: At any given time, so many regions are planning for the same/similar major upcoming Participant Journey (PJ) moments. We know we have regions with really strong approaches that center in the Principles of Adult Learning and our PJ recommendations. We want to do two things:

Broadly share excellent plans from regional leaders for an upcoming moment that is ‘annotated’ by members of the Adult Learning team, the CLE team, Program Partners, and others, to highlight various choice points, connections to the PAL, Alumni anchor moments, and our PJ recommendations for regional leaders to learn from, adapt, and use in their own contexts.
Create real-time space for program leaders to come together in a ‘Participant Journey Design Workshop” to develop and refine their your own plans

Audience: Any Program Leader that designs or executes alumni moments.

Timeline:

‘Annotated’ Regional Alumni Induction plans will be available to all in early February.
The Adult Learning Team, alongside Program Partners, members of the Collective Learning and Engagement team, and others, will host the Participant Journey Design Workshop (via zoom) on February 20th from 1:30-3:00 EST, open to everyone (invitation and more information forthcoming).

We should have greater clarity as to TFA's FY21 annual planning and budgeting process and timeline by Jan 17. At the end of the day, it’s the ED’s decision how much time you and your team are investing in annual/strategic planning and budget prep right now, given the high likelihood for change. Some regions are pushing pause until greater guidance, others are ensuring baseline plans are in place and a few are moving forward with detailed plans.

Regardless of your approach, We wanted to pass along a box folder that houses the deck, recording, chat log and regional strat and annual planning resources from our December COS Think Tank.

2010 alum, Kate Fulginiti was named Assistant Principal of the Year for Duval County Public Schools (DCPS)! We also had 9 winners of teacher of the year for their schools (8 alums and 1 corps member). Of the 9, three made it to the top 15 for DCPS teacher of the year, and Michael Ham (2017 alum) is currently top 5.

TFA has produced a Duval County Top 5 Teacher of the Year for 4 of the past 5 years...WOW!!!

The first thing we did was a bunch of research. We used the guidance from the national team here and here. And then pulled all relevant data into this sheet: TFA Miami-Dade Goal Worksheet.
From there, we identified key choice/decision points and sought to get staff input. We engaged staff on 5 key questions with options through this doc and had people share perspective in person and via this form.
Then we engaged staff in a conversation around the results of that form aggregated here. Sam also had conversations with several foundations we’re connected to and some of our board members.
Then, Sam made the final decisions and we shared some explanation of how we’re thinking about this through our near-final proposal.

Alumni Comms Plan

We’ve been conscious of not contributing to the overmarketing of Coronavirus in the last few weeks, and had made the decision not to send out a communication related to Coronavirus to our alumni broadly because TFA wasn’t positioned to contribute any unique value there. As things have rapidly evolved and communities across the country are navigating pandemic responses, including school closures, we believe that TFA is now positioned to uniquely contribute to our alumni, corps member and staff network by acting as a convener, bringing the network together virtually in a valuable way. We are working quickly to create a central digital space for the TFA network to easily connect, share resources, and surface challenges that they, their communities, students, etc are navigating so that collaboration and problem solving can occur.

With 28 days until the start of Summer Training, we still have just under 100 open roles. Our ability to deliver on this critical priority for our corps members and their future students is dependent on us being able to field a summer training team who is best positioned to have a strong impact in these roles and can step into roles with limited training given strong experience and expertise. While we have 248 amazing seasonal staff members who have already accepted their offers, we NEED more incredibly talented full-time staff members to join us.We are opening up a second opportunity for YOU to apply to join the team. You now have until 9 am EST on Monday, May 18th to apply for Learning Community Chair, DEI Facilitator, and Leadership Coach.
