His whole life has been controlled, overlooked, and analysed.  Especially through the telescreen that notices his every move. 

“He wondered again for whom he was writing the diary. For the future, for the past – for an age that might be imaginary. And in front of him lay not death but annihilation. The diary would be reduced to ashes and himself to vapor.”

This shows that, even though the fear of death and of being caught is present, people sometimes do what they see as necessary for the bigger picture. One can look at it as bravery.
