He taught biology and chemistry at in New York and was hired to serve as a middle school principal at Delhi Central School in 2006. Dr. Richard Hughes later served as high school principal at the Delhi, New York-based school and joined Otselic Valley Central School as superintendent in 2010. Through four years in this role, Richard Hughes implemented various initiatives that improved student success and administrative efficiency. He added a full-day prekindergarten program to prepare young students better, expanded college course offerings, and incorporated Lexile reading levels onto report cards to increase focus on literacy. Student NYS achievement results increased by 25 percent in the DCMO BOCES ranking within two years under his leadership. Dr. Hughes has since served as superintendent at Central Valley Central School and Frontier Central School. Among other accomplishments at the latter, he sponsored an in-person summer school for special education students. He expanded its summer feeding program to an average of 2,000 meals distributed per day. He now works as a consultant, providing advice to education technology companies in professional development, and career exploration.
