Prior to the Islamic reevaluation of 1979 schools in Iran had both boys and girls, now the schools are single sex. Schooling in Iran is divided into 2 levels; Primary schools (6-12), and high schools (12-18). Iran has free public schools as well as very expensive private schools. There are also schools called Nemuneh Mardomi which are believed to be better than public schools but less expensive than private schools. These schools are also very hard to get into, they have an extensive exam and only take the students with the best scores, . For most parents, the entrance exams for the Nemuneh Mardomi are more important than the national exams which the students take at the end of primary schools. It is believed by many parents in Iran that getting into one of these schools will secure there kids bright futures. Along with your normal math, social studies, literature, and science, Iranian kids also study sports, technology, and most importantly, the Quran. Studying the Quran in schools did not become mandatory until the Islamic revaluation in 1979.

Clothing women wore chadors men wore long pants and long sleeve collared shirts/ Schools were co ed. Patriarchy was largely accepted, male head of the family would make most major domestic and financial decisions and quite often with consultation with other male relatives, but not female members of the household. This has changed with modern Iranians. Now wives and grown-up children participate actively in such decision-making. Iran was ruled by the shah whose dictatorship subdued disagreement and confined political freedom Families are very extended and closely knit. They often live very close to other family members, sometimes even in the same house. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and all their children would often live in a big house together.
