We can see Christopher's communcation skills becoming stronger. The discovery of his mother's letters symbolize the rebirth and strengthening of his relation ship with his mother, and the breakdown between his father. He starts to understand the complicated emotions of betrayal and forgiveness. This discovery pushes Christopher into having to discuss sensitive matters with his father, making him grow. Christopher also decides if his day is good or bad through the color of cars, which symbolizes that he only takes in specific data, words, and images showing how he has a hard time communicating with different types of people. His liking for prime numbers show that he has a peculiar and specific way of viewing the world.

Example- chapter 11 page 8.9

Him being so particular about his watch caused him to prioritize his logicness over emotion. The police officer told him multiple times in a very stern way to hand over his belongings therefore when logic goes against emotion it can cause conflict.

Logic vs emotion

logic=orderly

emotion=chaos

Character analyst- his father represents emotional aspects of a person while Christopher is very logical. Their relationship significantly demonstrates the theme of logic vs emotion, where logic is ordered like Christopher and emotion is describing chaos like his father.

Symbolism: Language, motifs (metaphors) he does not understand them therefore they do not serve a purpose. He values the order and patterns. The yellow and red cars represent the motifs of orders since it has a certain pattern.

Narrative Connector - Metaphors are used as literary devices, as well as part of the theme. Christopher thinks that metaphors are lies, and does not like them, since lies are not orderly, which goes against his logical ways of thinking.

The narrative structure reflects Christopher's need for order with numbered chapters with prime numbers. The narrative that includes mathematics and facts, this showcases Christopher's difficulty processing other people's emotions and highlights how he is isolated for others.

In this scene, Siobhan listened to Christopher's story and encouraged him that the book was really good. Christopher realized that he could do detective work without breaking the promise with his father. He realized this while talking with Siobhan, same as he chose to start writing a murder mystery book while interacting with her. Therefore, Siobhan gives him ideas to challenge new stuffs and gives him the chance to grow up.

Ed Boone

Ed Boone, Christopher's father is giving him restrictions that stops him to do his detective work and creates external conflict to Christopher. However, Christopher didn't stop searching about the incident, which made him grow by creating courage to choose his own actions and being independent from his father.(maybe)

Mrs. Alexander

Mrs. Alexander is the person who let Christopher interact with stranger slowly overcoming the uncomfortable feelings around strangers.

Example: Chapter 97

                 In chapter 97, Christopher and Mrs. Alexander met at the supermarket. They later chose to go to the park even though Christopher felt uncomfortable around people who he doesn't know. He overcame his internal conflict and took action, which made him grow up. On the other hand, four red cars in a row make it a black day. This shows Christopher's logic, which is straightforward but not always accurate. This passage demonstrates Chistopher's unique mind, and that he is not always logical, and sometimes based on emotions.

Christopher has a strong commitment to logic, and he acts based on his beliefs. Christopher's interaction with his father shows how logic conflicts with emotion. Christopher wants to do the detection because in his logic he thinks he has to find out who killed Wellington. But father wants him to stop. Christopher didn't want to make his dad angry, so in chapter 41 he stops talking about his detection or says sorry even though he doesn't really understand. Also, he promises father that he will stop doing the detection (chapter 79), but he keeps on doing the detection. Father’s anger doesn’t directly affect him and makes him stop doing the detection, but emotionally he feels sorry for making his father frustrated even though he doesn't understand why, and acting against what he was told by his father.

Father and Christopher symbolizes the theme of logic vs emotion as father represents the emotional aspect in this story and Christopher plays the role of logic. Since Christopher feels comfortable with maths and science, it contrasts with the ambiguity and inconsistency of human emotion. In chapter 179, Christopher tries to navigate the hardships throughout the use of mathematics and logical thinking, utilizing his own formula to lead to the answer. This shows how Christopher finds comfort in mathematics and logical thinking. Ed Boone is symbolizing the emotional aspect as he follows his emotion to make a decision, rather than using logic like Christopher. In particular, Ed was lying to Christopher about his mother in order to protect him. This demonstrates he decides based on his emotional aspect.

He felt sick because he strongly trusted his father, and he found out that the person that he trusted the most was lying to him the whole time.

This is a significant chapter when logic and emotions crashes each other inside Christopher. Until now, Logic conflicts with emotion between Christopher and his environment, such as father. However, in this chapter Christopher got control by fear and made a non-logical decision. The decision was to go to London to live with mother, nonetheless, he didn't know how to get to London and knew that he was going to struggle getting there. Therefore, the reader can realize that Christopher's logical thinking was thwarted by his emotion of fear.

Narrative connector:

The book is led by the first person of “I.” Throughout the book, he relies on logic, pattern, and routines. He communicates his actions and emotions through these patterns. In chapter 181, he has a specific routine on everything he does during the day. This is one way of communicating his thoughts and actions.

The setting:

When Christopher wanted to go to London, he encountered some difficulties. Riding the train alone, moving away from father has been a complete new change for Christopher. This shows that he is starting to grow up and become mature, but also at the same time he improved his communication skills. For example when the policeman came to Chrisopher, he politely replied to the policemen’s question. If we compare the beginning of the book when he hit the policemen, we can see a big change and see how he grew up. He is now able to communicate well with strangers.

Also, he even asked the lady for a map. This also shows that he is getting better at communicating.

(Himari)

He cannot communicate with others and does not know how to get tickets, so he observes others and buys them. This shows that he still has some hardship with communication. During the journey, Christopher faces many conflicts caused by his own autism. However, he manages to communicate to himself and figure out how to get to his mother's house. For example, in chapter 211, Christopher panics because his surrounding was too loud and busy after arriving to London. Though, he manages to calm down a bit and think what to do next, which he asked help from the strangers. Moreover, even though he was panicking inside his mind, Christophers learns how to settle by himself and not showing the panic to the outside, such as when he was using the escalators. Finally, when he got tired and sitting on the bench, shows how he could listen to his body or emotion and deal with these. Christopher is getting better at communicating with his emotions, which could lead him to get better at communicating to stranger as well.

-Reika
