In this story many people seem to look at him as the villian but he was truly only trying to help the narrator with her deppression. John is so sure that he knows what’s best for his wife that he disregards her own opinion of the matter.  This ignorance is why John is no mere cardboard villain. It builds up through his lifetime and he continues to deal with it. He believes that he is the one fit to rule even though hes young. He works under his brother for years but then he wants to through his brother over and rule. So he starts to build a army to over throw his brother but fails.
