Navigation minimizes distances.

Navigation is all around us, every day, even if we are not sailors. 

We use it and its principles in most of our daily activities, sometimes unaware.

Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;

Omitted, all the voyage of their life

Is bound in shallows and in miseries.

On such a full sea are we now afloat,

And we must take the current when it serves

Na esperança de que estas páginas centrais possam ser especialmente úteis a estudantes e professores, sobretudo do ensino básico, propomos aqui a construção de um instrumento simples, um quadrante, e a sua utilização em algumas medições astronómicas. As sugestões aqui apresentadas são baseadas em propostas didácticas apresentadas na obra The Universe at your fingertips , publicada pela Astronomical Society of the Pacific (v. "Para saber mais" ).

As the name implies, a quadrant is an instrument consisting essentially of a quarter of a graduated circle to which a plumb line is associated. As already mentioned in the Books of Knowledge of Astronomy (13th century), its primary function is the measurement of heights (height here understood as angular distance of an object in relation to the horizon), but there have been more sophisticated forms, with tracings Which allowed determining the time from the height of the Sun. It was perhaps the first astronomical instrument used by Portuguese navigators (in a simplified form), and it would have been used, above all, in measuring the height of the Star to determine latitude. To construct a simple quadrant, photocopy (with magnification) and cut out fig. 1, and stick it on cardstock or card. So reinforced, cut out the quadrant again. Cut a straw from sipping drinks so that it is the same size as the side marked with the letter A, and fasten the straw along the contour on that side using glue. Make a small hole in the place marked with an x ​​and make a thread through that hole; Give it a knot or use any other process to prevent it from loosening. Tie one weight to the other end of the cord. The final appearance of the instrument is shown in Fig. 2. It is also presented here how to use it in height measurements - with the instrument upright, aiming the object under study through the straw; The value of the desired height is given by the position of the wire in the scale.

Measuring latitude 
 
When they were in the northern hemisphere, enjoying the visibility of the Polar Star, the Portuguese navigators used the quadrant to calculate the latitude from this star, since at first approximation their height is equal to the latitude of the place of observation. To simulate this process, simply locate the Polar Star (use the map on the last page) and measure your height with the quadrant. Compare the values ​​obtained by several observers; Then compare with a value of the latitude tabulated for the place of observation and, if possible, with the value provided by a GPS receiver. These procedures will feed into a discussion of the accuracy of measurements and the importance of technology in increasing accuracy. An equally interesting activity is to compare the behavior of Polar in relation to the other stars, with respect to their apparent position. To do this, choose some comparison stars in the constellation Ursa Major, and at one hour intervals over the same night, measure and record the height of these stars and the Polar. It may be interesting to combine this activity with what we suggest in the June 2005 Observatory (page 6 in the paper edition, page 5 in the online edition). 
 
Measure the apparent movement of the Sun

Quando se encontravam no hemisfério norte, desfrutando da visibilidade da Estrela Polar, os navegadores portugueses utilizavam o quadrante para calcular a latitude a partir desta estrela, uma vez que, em primeira aproximação, a sua altura é igual à latitude do lugar de observação. Para simular este processo, basta localizar a Estrela Polar (utilize o mapa da última página) e efectuar a medição da sua altura com o quadrante. Compare-se os valores obtidos por vários observadores; depois faça-se a comparação com um valor da latitude tabelado para o local de observação, e, se possível, com o valor fornecido por um receptor de GPS. Estes procedimentos darão matéria para uma discussão sobre a precisão das medições e a importância da tecnologia no aumento dessa precisão. Uma actividade igualmente interessante consiste em comparar o comportamento da Polar em relação às outras estrelas, no que se refere à sua posição aparente. Para tal, escolha algumas estrelas de comparação na constelação da Ursa Maior, e, em intervalos de uma hora, ao longo de uma mesma noite, meça e registe a altura dessas estrelas e da Polar. Poderá ser interessante conjugar esta actividade com a que sugerimos n' O Observatório de Junho 2005 (p. 6 na edição em papel, p. 5 na edição on-line).

Esta observação deve ser feita pelo método indicado na fig. 3, nunca por observação directa do Sol, como já se alertou. Quando o quadrante estiver apontado para o Sol, então deve-se poder ver uma imagem luminosa projectada no lado da palha oposto ao que está virado para o astro. Enquanto uma pessoa faz esta pontaria, outra efectua a leitura na escala. Este procedimento pode ser usado em diferentes actividades, com diferentes durações. Pode ser utilizado, por exemplo, no estudo da variação da altura do Sol ao longo de um dia, fazendo observações espaçadas de uma hora, por exemplo. Mais interessante será realizar uma actividade ao longo do ano lectivo, ou pelo menos durante várias semanas, efectuando a medição da altura solar sempre à mesma hora, de preferência cerca do meio-dia (no período de Hora de Verão, faz-se a observação uma hora mais tarde), uma vez por semana. Registando os valores da altura do Sol numa tabela (ou gráfico) pode-se partir para uma discussão sobre a origem das estações. Será certamente interessante conjugar esta actividade com a elaboração de um analema (v. O Observatório de Abril de 2005).

O quadrante pode ser utilizado para medir a separação angular entre objectos astronómicos. Para tal, deve ser utilizado do modo representado na fig. 4: faz-se pontaria a um dos objectos, e depois coloca-se o fio de prumo na posição correspondente à posição do segundo objecto (para este fim, será útil fazer, com um furador, os sulcos correspondentes a cada valor da escala do astrolábio, para aí se prender o fio). Este procedimento poderá ser aplicado em várias actividades. Por exemplo, durante os primeiros meses de 2006, poder-se-á efectuar a medição da distância angular entre o planeta Marte e uma ou mais estrelas de referência, de preferência pertencentes a constelações do zodíaco e nas proximidades do planeta (Aldebaran no Touro, brilhante e fácil de identificar, será uma boa escolha); neste caso bastará fazer observações de 15 em 15 dias. As observações devem ser acompanhadas do registo, numa carta celeste, das posições relativas dos objectos observados. Uma sequência interessante das observações efectuadas será procurar explicá-las através de diagramas representando as órbitas e os movimentos da Terra e de Marte, e as constelações do zodíaco. O mesmo tipo de actividade pode (e deve, até preferencialmente) ser feito relativamente à Lua, mas nesse caso as observações devem ser efectuadas com muito maior frequência, de preferência a um ritmo diário, sendo importante registar a hora a que as observações são feitas. Deve-se igualmente registar: a direcção em que a Lua é observada; a sua altura, medida com o quadrante; em que fase se encontra. Subsequentemente, deve-se procurar relacionar as observações efectuadas e interpretá-las esquematicamente.

Será um recurso de inestimável utilidade em todas as escolas onde o ensino de conceitos astronómicos seja levado a sério, sobretudo naquelas que desenvolvem projectos científico-pedagógicos na área da Astronomia, ou que o pretendem fazer. Para uma introdução aos aspectos históricos da utilização do quadrante e instrumentos afins na navegação, recomenda-se a obra Medir Estrelas , de António Estácio dos Reis (edição dos CTT) de que, aliás, glosámos o sugestivo título.  The compass is a tool for identifying the points of the compass (North, South, East and West on the Earth's surface and atmosphere, to give guidance and navigation. The use of the compass is fundamental in the open sea, in vast spaces, where there are no points of reference, Used in conjunction with a clock and a sextant gives rise to a very accurate navigation system. This tool has improved navigation facilitating maritime commerce and travel by ocean making them safer and more efficient.



The compass may be associated with a sundial which allows to know the solar hour during the day, simply by observing the shadow produced by the bar, perpendicular to the needle, after the latter has been positioned towards the North.



The compass owes its name to the box of boxwood that originally contained the instrument . In the old sailing ships compass it was kept in the binnacle, placed in the bow rudder cabine.
