Benwick is going to be attacked by the army of King Arthur and Sir Launcelot has to make a decision. He can either fight the war or ask for peace. His knights want to fight for war but he himself thinks that peace is better than war. Sir Launcelot sends a message to King Arthur and he wants to have peace too but his nephew, Sir Gawain, wants to fight to defend their repuation. The message gets to Sir Launcelot that King Arthur has denied and they are getting prepared for war.

Sir Bors fought him first but was wounded by Sir Gawain and therefore returned. Sir Lyonel offered to joust and they did, but Sir Lyonel lost that too. For 6  months Sir Gawain defeated everyone who accepted his challenge. At last he challenged Sir Launcelot and he accepted. When they were fighting Sir Launcelot noticed that Sir Gawain only grow stronger and stronger as time went by. This was a secret known only by King Arthur and Sir Gawain himself, he grew stronger until noon, at this time he peaked. After noon his strength would dwindle.

He sent Sir Gawain falling to the ground, but didn't kill him. He said to retreat and not to come back. But Sir Gawain said to kill him now or else he will challenge Sir Launcelot again. When Sir Gawain recovered he challenged Sir Launcelot again. They both jousted and Sir Launcelot knocked him to the floor and they began a swordfight. Sir Launcelot defended himself until Sir Gawain's strength returned to normal and he struck him, knocking him to the floor. He again didn't finish Sir Gawain as he said that he does not strike knights that have fallen.
